1981 album Raise! Composed By Wayne Vaughn/Maurice White Earth, Wind & Fire leader Maurice White was publicly upset about what he perceived as a lack of promotion of the band's 1980 gold double-album Faces by Columbia Records. Those at the label probably wanted the band to continue in the pop-oriented sound found on their double-platinum album I Am. In order to win the label's attention again, White had to do some revamping. He brought in guitarist Roland Bautista and began co-writing, with Emotions member Wanda Vaughn and her husband Wayne Vaughn, a song that reflected the then-emerging electronic sound of the '80s. Not to be confused with the same-named hit by Archie Bell & the Drells, "Let's Groove" certainly was a change. Starting off with a robotic-sounding vocoder riff, it served up a more gritty-sounding EWF for the '80s, laced with Brecker Brothers-supplied horn blasts that rival those of EWF's 1976 gold single "Getaway." The million-selling "Let's Groove" went gold, holding the number one R&B spot for eight weeks and peaking at number three pop in late 1981. Lead singer Sheila Hutchinson and her sisters Wanda and Jeanette were only teenagers when they crashed the soul charts in 1969 with the engaging "So I Can Love You," but they sang gospel as children and enjoyed secular fame locally before signing with Memphis-based Volt and working with producers Isaac Hayes and David Porter. When Stax folded in 1975, the group hooked up with Maurice White of Earth, Wind & Fire, an association that led to the number one pop/R&B hit "Best of My Love" in 1977. Two years after Best of My Love, Maurice White and the Emotions collaborated on "Boogie Wonderland," which was both a number two R&B and number six pop hit. They issued three more albums on White's ARC label from 1979 to 1981, but were unable to duplicate their earlier success. They moved to the Red label for the 1984 LP Sincerely, which included the single "All Things Come in Time." They issued three other singles from the album, but none made much impact, though each one charted. They then signed with Motown, but issued only one album, If I Only Knew. 1983 album Powerlight Steel Drums - Robert Greenidge Composed By Wayne Vaughn/Vaughn, W./Maurice White This lush and romantic song was the second single release from the group's 1982 album Powerlight. With a mature and gentle touch, "Side By Side" exploited the loving aspects of one of the music's business' deepest thinkers. While the love offered here on the face seems breezy, there also seemed to be tenacity and sadness under the surface. That fact seemed to inform the whole Powerlight sessions. As Maurice White sings "My love I bring to you," it does seem to come with baggage. By the time the bridge of "With this lovin, I dedicate to you" ultimately leads to the "Side by side" hook, the love feast begins. The female voice heard with White is that of the song's co-writer, Wanda Vaughn, better known as Wanda Hutchinson, the lead singer of the Emotions. It's her presence that seems to bring out a playfulness in White and they both "Shake it on down." For a group that was always known for their maverick spirit, steel drums, and Tom 84's horn and string arrangements, that makes this sound like EWF but even more adventurous, eclectic, and sensual.
