This is a Halloween video trick I did for my Nature of Math class at Biola University, October 28, 2009. It was another experiment in video editing and mixing video with live action. UPDATE: Version 2 - I fixed the audio so you can hear what I'm saying better. All this attention was quite a surprise - I mainly posted the video for the students who weren't in class that day, and so my students could pass it on to a few friends. I've read a bunch of comments, and I have a few general responses: Math: No, I wasn't actually trying to teach anything with the video - it was just for fun. This was the last 5 minutes of a 75 minute class - I actually taught real math for the first 70 minutes. And yes, I love teaching this class, and I try to keep it lively by doing little fun things like this once in a while. Software/Camera: I used Pinnacle Studio Ultimate, version 12.1 - the "picture-in-picture" feature for the special effects. I filmed it with a simple Panasonic PV-GS35 MiniDV camcorder. Idea/Time: I did this last semester as an April Fool's joke. New class, new year, I decided to try it again, with a few more twists. It took me about 45 minutes to film the video, maybe 2 hours to edit and refine it, then I practiced the interaction with the video a couple times. This is a video of our 1st visit to a Project Maths class in Donegal, which documents the initial introduction of Project Maths in a 1st Year classroom. This class was based on a Teaching and Learning Plan "An Introduction to Probability". The class started with a brainstorming session and students were asked where they had heard about "chance" before. This was followed by giving them various statements and asking them to put them into the following categories: "Certain not to Happen", "Certain to happen", "Area of Uncertainty". Students were challenged to come up with words or phrases (of their own) associated with chance, probability and uncertainty. Ms. Hunter then gave them a probability scale and they were asked to put numbers on it. Students replaced "Certain" and "Impossible" with the numbers 0 and 1 and on the computer, the students had to place these sentences on the Probability scale. The students liked the fact that they were actually enjoying maths and learning without even almost realising it. Ms. Hunter also found that the class responded very well as the students sometimes find it difficult to follow instructions, so the active learning actually motivated them to listen. Students found the group and computer work very engaging.. + Informações

This is a trick I did for my Nature of Math class at Biola University yesterday. I like experimenting with mixing live action with video. This one has a Thanksgiving theme. Update (Nov 20): Wow! Thanks for all the kind comments, I appreciate it, and I'm flattered. Thanks! In response to a couple comments: I've fixed the Closed Captioning ("CC") so it matches the words better (At first I tried the automatic transcription which didn't work too well). Also, yes, I do actually teach math most of the time - I did this at the end of a 75-minute class. Also, sorry for the somewhat choppy nature of the sound. I had three audio sources - the lapel mic I was wearing, the mic in the camcorder in the back of the room, and the audio from the video playing on the projector. I'm no expert, but I tried to adjust the levels a bit so it's easy to hear the words. Finally: regarding the idea of being content with what we do have, I mean that we can learn to be content with our circumstances and blessings we've been given. But we can also at the same time continue to strive to be better people, and always want to improve our selves and our character. Happy Thanksgiving!. + Informações

This is a video of our 2nd visit to a Project Maths class in Carlow, which documents Project Maths in a Senior Cycle Year classroom. This class was based on a Teaching and Learning Plan dealing with Trigonometric Graphs. The students were asked to draw Sine graphs and were encouraged to discuss the graphs they drew with their fellow students. The students liked working with other students as they found it made the topic easier to understand when you could discuss it. They also found that as a consequence of the lesson being a lot more interactive, it was easier to remember as they were actually coming up with the answers themselves instead of being told them by the teacher. The teacher found that the students were becoming a lot more independent and effective in their learning as they were able to discuss their answers with their friends and were not afraid to ask questions that they would have previously been afraid would have sounded silly. They realise that they are all working together to learn the concept. The teacher also found that she was seeing a gradual progress with the students after teaching them Project Maths programme for 3/ 4 months. Some students were still finding it hard that they were not being told the answer. Overall the teacher felt that there was an obvious improvement in the students' confidence and understanding of maths.. + Informações
