My relationship with Martha blew hot and cold. One day she was bringing a bucket full of fruit flavoured wine coolers to refresh everybody in the studio, which was truly lovely, then the next day she wouldn't even speak to me. In 1990 I signed a contract with her and paid a large advance to finally complete an album with her, an album that still hasn't been recorded to this day. But I can't help but adore her, even though she treated me terribly. It's hard to stay mad with one of your heroes, and I grew up with her music, and still adore her in every way. We all cried in the studio, in March 1989, when she did the vocal on the first song we ever recorded with her, "Step Into My Shoes", her first recording for ten years, at that time. Then we did "Angel In Disguise"straight afterwards. Then in July 1989, Martha and The Vandellas sang "Step Into My Shoes" on the Kelly And Company TV Show in Detroit. Then we cut three more songs in the studio, "Number One", and then the duet with GC Cameron on "You're All I Need To Get By", and finally this wonderful reworking of her mega classic, "Heat Wave", the record that Martin Luther King adopted in 1963 as the theme to his legendary civil-rights movement "I Have A Dream" tour of America, a message and sentiment which has only finally come true now in 2009, a full forty six years later, as the USA embraced its first African-American President.. + Informações

Another gem from Holland-Dozier-Holland, "Quicksand" was the follow-up to Martha & The Vandellas' big 1963 summertime hit "Heat Wave". Released in November 1963, the song charted #8 on both the Pop and R&B (Soul) charts.. + Informações

Martha and the Vandellas (known from 1967 to 1972 as Martha Reeves and the Vandellas) were among the most successful groups of the Motown roster during the period 1963-1967. In contrast to other Motown groups such as The Supremes and The Marvelettes, Martha and the Vandellas were known for a harder, R&B sound, typified by "(Love Is Like a) Heat Wave", "Nowhere to Run", "Jimmy Mack" and, their signature song, "Dancing in the Street". During their nine-year run on the charts from 1963 to 1972, Martha and the Vandellas charted over twenty-six hits and recorded in the styles of doo-wop, R&B, pop, blues, rock and soul. Ten Vandellas songs reached the top ten of the Billboard R&B singles chart, including two R&B number ones. Twelve of the Vandellas' songs charted within the Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100, with six songs charting within the Top Ten including "Dancing in the Street," "Heat Wave," "Nowhere to Run" and "Jimmy Mack." In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked Martha and the Vandellas #96 on their list of the 100 greatest artists of all time. Teenagers Rosalind Ashford and Annette Beard first became acquainted after a local music manager hired them to be members of a girl group he named "The Del-Phis". Ashford & Beard, along with then-lead vocalist Gloria Williams, performed at local clubs, private events, church benefits, YMCA events and school functions.
