Martha and the Vandellas (known from 1967 to 1972 as Martha Reeves and the Vandellas) were among the most successful groups of the Motown roster during the period 1963-1967. In contrast to other Motown groups such as The Supremes and The Marvelettes, Martha and the Vandellas were known for a harder, R&B sound, typified by "(Love Is Like a) Heat Wave", "Nowhere to Run", "Jimmy Mack" and, their signature song, "Dancing in the Street". During their nine-year run on the charts from 1963 to 1972, Martha and the Vandellas charted over twenty-six hits and recorded in the styles of doo-wop, R&B, pop, blues, rock and soul. Ten Vandellas songs reached the top ten of the Billboard R&B singles chart, including two R&B number ones. Twelve of the Vandellas' songs charted within the Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100, with six songs charting within the Top Ten including "Dancing in the Street," "Heat Wave," "Nowhere to Run" and "Jimmy Mack." In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked Martha and the Vandellas #96 on their list of the 100 greatest artists of all time. Teenagers Rosalind Ashford and Annette Beard first became acquainted after a local music manager hired them to be members of a girl group he named "The Del-Phis". Ashford & Beard, along with then-lead vocalist Gloria Williams, performed at local clubs, private events, church benefits, YMCA events and school functions. A Motown Records, também conhecida como Tamla-Motown, é uma gravadora americana de discos fundada em 14 de dezembro de 1959 por Berry Gordy Jr. na cidade de Detroit, estado americano de Michigan conhecida como "Motor Town", devido às montadoras de automóveis ali instaladas. O nome da gravadora é uma redução de "Motor Town". Nos anos 60 foi a mais bem sucedida na criação daquilo que se tornou conhecido como O Som da Motown, um estilo de "soul" bem característico, com o uso de instrumentos como pandeiros, baterias e instrumentos do "rhythm and blues" além de um estilo de 'canto-e-resposta' (com a repetição, por parte do coral, de frases inteiras ou palavras de alguns versos) originário da música gospel. It has been reported that a major hurricane and earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter Scale hit Fanny's place in the early hours of this morning with its epicentre in the Crutch Hill area. Victims were seen wandering around aimlessly, muttering "Faaackinell". The hurricane decimated the area causing approximately £30 worth of damage. Several priceless collections of mementos from Majorca and the Costa Del Sol were damaged beyond repair. Three areas of historic burnt out cars were disturbed. Many locals were woken well before their giros arrived. Chav FM reported that hundreds of residents were confused and bewildered and were still trying to come to terms with the fact that something interesting had happened! One resident - a 15-year-old mother of 3 said, "It was such a shock, my little Chardonnay-Mercedes came running into my bedroom crying. My youngest two, Tyler-Morgan and Crystal-Storm slept through it all. I was still shaking while I was skinning up and watching Jeremy Kyle the next morning." Apparently looting, muggings and car crime were unaffected and carried on as normal. The British Red Cross has so far managed to ship 4000 crates of Lambrini to the area to help the stricken locals. Inductees: Martha Reeves (vocals; born July 18, 1941), Rosalyn Ashford (vocals; born September 2, 1943), Betty Kelly (vocals; born September 16, 1944), Lois Reeves (birth date unknown), Annette Sterling (vocals; birth date unknown, 1942). From the outset, Martha Reeves voice possessed an earthy, direct quality that distinguished her from other female singers - such as sultry Mary Wells or demure Diana Ross - at Motown. Her voice bore the righteous fervor of gospel and the flinty edginess of rhythm & blues, which, combined with Motowns stylized pop-soul approach, made for a compelling package. Together with her backup singers, the Vandellas, Reeves recorded a classic run of singles in the mid-Sixties, most of them composed by the songwriting team of Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Eddie Holland. The Vandellas hit streak included what may be the definitive Motown anthem, Dancing in the Street, as well as such danceable blockbusters as (Love Is Like a) Heat Wave, Nowhere to Run and Jimmy Mack. The eldest of eleven children, Reeves began singing with the Del-Phis in 1960. She was discovered in 1961 at Detroits fabled Twenty Grand Club, where Motown A&R man Mickey Stevenson heard her perform Reeves prize for having won a talent contest.
