Spent some time on this one. I rendered it with a rip version of music right from the CD. Also, since the VCR tape is so old, and kept going outta sync with the CD audio, I had to add 1/10 sec clip copies from the video every 54 seconds to lengthen the video to keep in Sync. Only You (From the MatM album The World Is A Ball 1986) Shot on a shoestring budget by Mark and Martha on black and white Super 8 film, and edited by their friend Bob Kennedy, Only You remains their personal favourite from all the MatM videos done in the 80s. At the time, Mark wrote this about making the video: If nothing else, the late 20th Century can be characterized by its state of perpetual crisis. Every day we view the extraordinary events and images of this ongoing crisis through the window of television. Medical miracles, the clichés of soap opera romance, the aftermath of a terrorist bombing, humans in outer space; these commonplace moments inspired the song Only You. At once a personal and global love song, Only You is a reminder that we are masters of our own destiny. In reflecting our troubled era, the lyrics embrace both human intimacy and the Apocalypse. After its initial release in March,1987, Only You received considerable critical acclaim, influencing the look of several subsequent television commercials and winning Best Music Video at the 1897 Yorkton Short Film & Video Festival as well as being nominated for Best Video at the Junos Awards the same year. This early rendition of 'Echo Beach' comes from footage shot by Henry Dunsmore and Robin Cass of Martha and the Muffins performing for the second year at the annual Hallowe'en Dance at the Ontario College of Art in Toronto on October 27, 1978. (The band's very first gig ever had been a year earlier at the same event.) Video cameras were very cumbersome at the time, with open reel, black and white video tape being the standard. Several years later, the original open reel tapes literally started to fall apart as they were being transferred to VHS in order to view the footage on a more up to date format. Only a few songs remain in a viewable state although the badly damaged sections are interesting in their own right as they flicker intermittently between figuritive and purely abstract images. Within eight months of this performance, MatM was signed with Virgin Records in the UK and 'Echo Beach' would go on to become an international hit in 1980. In 2005, Toronto Star music critic Vit Wagner wrote, "...Echo Beach, 25 years after it became an international hit, is one of the most, if not the most, iconic new-wave touch-stone in Canadian history.". + Informações
