Leo Marjane was one of great French singers of 1930s and 1940s. Her unique "sadly grinning" deep voice and a strong dramatic expression were, two decades later, an inspiration for another great star of the French chanson - Juliette Greco. Leo Marjane's grand career had an abrupt end with the end of WWII. The French remembered, that during the occupation she entertained the Nazis with a little too much enthusiasm. After 1945 she retired. This beautiful melancholic slow-fox was composed by Charles Trenet. The music is illustrated by the photos of one of the greatest photographers of the 20 century, Brassai (his Hungarian name was Gyula Halas). Recording: Disque Gramophone, 1941. + Informações

There is a popular myth that when the Andrews Sisters released their hugely successful recording of Sholom Secunda's "Bei Mir Bist Du Schön" in 1938, the composer's mother was so distraught, she fasted for a week to expiate her sins. The reason for her distress? Only two months earlier, her son had sold the rights to the song for a mere thirty dollars! The composer had no idea the song would become such a hit. Written in 1932, "Bei Mir Bist Du Schön" (translation: "To Me You Are Beautiful") was part of a Yiddish operetta called "I Would If I Could", written in 1932 by Abraham Bloom, with music by Secunda and lyrics by his writing partner, Jacobs. Within two months of the sale, a little-known musical trio called the Andrews Sisters recorded a newly adapted English-language version of the song, with lyrics by Sammy Cahn and Saul Chaplin. The only Yiddish that remained was the title, repeated throughout the song. Released by Decca Records, it became the Andrews Sisters' first major hit record. "Bei Mir Bist Du Schön" quickly became a worldwide phenomenon. The Russians loved it so much that they claimed it as their own. It was even a hit in Germany under the Nazi regime?that is, until it was discovered that the composer and lyricist were Jewish, whereupon the song was promptly banned. French vedette of the 1930s and 1940s, Léo Marjane, who was recording many international hits, redorded this one for Disque Gramophone in 1938, in French and in English versions..

In English: I've closed my window The falling fog is freezing Into my room he enters, Our bedroom where our past is now dead. I'm alone tonight With my dreams I'm alone tonight Without your love. Night falls, My joys are over, My broken heart May forever be heavy. I'm alone tonight With my sorrow I've lost all hope For your return, And yet I love you still and forever Don't leave me alone without your love. Above the chimney, the winds lament Roses silently shed their petals, The clock strikes the quarter hour, As hail cradles boredom. One of the most famous French singers of the late 1930's and 1940's was without a doubt Léo Marjane... Her deep, warm voice and impeccable diction enthralled millions in Europe. Although she had recorded a few songs in the early 30's it wasn't until 1937 that her career took off when she recorded "La chapelle au clair de lune" (By the chapel in the moonlight) and "En septembre sous la pluie" (September in the rain). Her voice and the American music seemed a match made in heaven and she made some English recordings as well. During the war her career continued to thrive with "Mon Ange", "Attends-moi mon amour" and especially the legendary "Seule ce soir". She even managed to record some American songs during the occupation, such as "L'arc en ciel" (Over the rainbow)or "L'honarable monsieur un tel" (The honorable mr so and so) and "Divine Biguine" (Begin the beguine). Her popularity and style was widely imitated by "new" singers such as Nila Cara or Simone Lallier... On the other hand she recorded a French version of "Bei Dir war es immer so schön". In 1943 she starred in the movie "Feu Nicolas". With the liberation came trouble... She was accused of having been too friendly with the occupier (she had opened a popular cabaret), of having toured in Germany with the orchestra of Raymond Legrand... At the trial it became clear she had been denounced by a former employee and resistant fighters came to her defense. She was acquitted but restarting her career proofed difficult as .... + Informações

The record I lost finally returned to me on a grey saturday morning at the flea market... Léo Marjane brings her version of the 1941 classic song "Bei Dir war es immer so schön" (Life was so beautiful at your side), from the musical comedy "Anita und der Teufel" and originally sung by Rosita Serrano. This French version , called "Sans toi, je n'ai plus rien" (Without you, I have nothing left) was recorded in 1942. Léo Marjane, the French female crooner par excellence, makes the song completely her own and delivers it in a style very different from Rosita Serrano's. "Amorcito Mio", another song from "Anita und der Teufel" was recorded in French by none other than Tino Rossi, ca. 1944. Léo Marjane was without doubt one of the finest and most popular singers of the late 1930's...She combined the French language with elegant orchestrations by Wal-Berg and Raymond Legrand. For "Disque Gramophone/La Voix de son Maître" she recorded original French songs and popular American songs. During the war her popularity grew even bigger after recording "Seule ce soir" (All alone tonight), touching the hearts and minds of women and men separated by war and misery (one might say that "Bei Dir war es immer so schön" is its German counterpart). She recorded many songs that became extremely popular, such as "Attends-moi mon amour", "Mon ange", "Le refrain de la pluie" and many more. Even during the occupation she recorded songs borrowed from the American repertory ('Divine Biguine/Begin the .... + Informações
