While still in high school she released her debut CD, Secrets, on Rounder Records. On this 2 DVD set Sierra teaches the mandolin solos she plays on Secrets, plus a number of instrumentals she recorded as a pre teen. To get things started, AcuTabs John Lawless leads Sierra through a discussion about how she came to be a stunning virtuoso at such a young age, including her early influences and inspirations. The bulk of the video, however, is all music with 10 complete songs and tunes demonstrated, taken from her critically-acclaimed debut album Secrets, from Rounder Records (CDROUN0601). Sierra teaches these songs carefully and in great detail. She and John discuss each solo before it is demonstrated by an all-star band, and then she breaks it down slowly, piece-by-piece. Even though a few of the solos are fairly difficult, the way she teaches puts them within the reach of most pickers. She goes slowly, breaking each peice into easily-digestible bits, stringing them all together in a format accessible to beginning and intermediate students. Captain Corelli's Mandolin is a 2001 film directed by John Madden and based on the novel of the same name by Louis de Bernières. It stars Nicolas Cage and Penélope Cruz. The film was panned by critics on its release and disappointed fans by deviating somewhat from the plot of the novel, with many of the book's tragic episodes softened. The main characters are Antonio Corelli, an Italian captain, and Pelagia, the daughter of the local physician, Dr. Iannis. Mark O'Connor composed 'A Bowl of Bula' on a trip to the Figi Islands in 1984 (Bula means 'good cheer'), and it has since become a Newgrass Mandolin classic. The tune's most celebrated version appears on O'Connor's 'New Nashville Cats.' An earlier version was recorded in 1985 for O'Connor's 'Meanings Of.' In early variants of what was to become "Strength in Numbers," 'A Bowl of Bula' was a standard to close the shows with. Often times O'Connor would switch from mandolin to violin for the closing solo if Sam Bush was in the line up to cover the mandolin part.
