Joshua Cook - Waltzing Matilda (Andrew Barton Joshua Cook - Waltzing Matilda (Andrew Barton "The Banjo" Paterson-1895)
3.45 min. | 4.076923 avaliação | 4158 exibições

The words to Waltzing Matilda were written by Andrew Barton ("the Banjo") Paterson, early in 1895 at Dagworth Station in Queensland, and the music was composed by Christina MacPherson, the sister of Robert MacPherson, the station owner. Waltzing Matilda is literally about a swagman who is discovered by some troopers with a stolen jumbuck (sheep), and who commits suicide by jumping into a billabong (waterhole) to evade capture. However, according to most historians of the song, the words of Waltzing Matilda are actually an oblique reference to, or inspired by, the suicide of a Unionist named Samuel Hoffmeister. This seems to be supported by Banjo Paterson's account of the writing of the song. Samuel Hoffmeister is believed to have participated in a Union raid on Dagworth Station on the night of the 2nd September 1894 in which the shearing shed was burnt down (a common enough incident during the Shearing Strikes of the 1890's). Later the following day, Hoffmeister shot himself. The subsequent inquest found that Hoffmeister committed suicide, however the testimony of the witnesses was contradictory, so the full events of the evening and subsequent day are still unknown. Several versions of the song have been written. The first version was to the tune by Christina MacPherson, which was based on a Scottish folk tune called Thou Bonnie Wood Of Craigielea, a setting of a poem by the Scottish poet Robert Tannahill; who, coincidentally, drowned himself in a canal in his home town .... + Informações

Jason Oscar McPherson, 25, of Bentworth Road, East Acton, died in mysterious circumstances on 18th January 2007 at Notting Hill Police Station after being arrested by officers. McPherson was travelling in a car with two other men when the vehicle was stopped by Metropolitan Police officers in St Annes Road, Ladbroke Grove. They were detained and taken to Notting Hill Police Station where a search was to be conducted. While there, police said Mr McPherson needed medical attention, but the reasons for this are not yet known. London Ambulance Service was called and he was taken to St Mary's Hospital, where he died at 11.32pm. From the Case File @ 4wardever, 8th April 2007: www.4wardever.org FAMILY ALREADY INJURED BY POLICE 3 WEEKS BEFORE THE KILLING In an interview in 'The Voice', Jason's Mother Sandra Richardson explained they had both been abused and injured by the police not 3 weeks before Jason's death, when she returned home from hospital to find police at her premises: "Jason asked them if they had a warrant. They did not show him one. I had my arm in a sling and Jason was getting my suitcase from the car. I told them I needed to sit down and they said I should sit on the pavement. I was eventually gassed and both Jason and I were arrested for obstructing the police. I was taken to the station. The sergeant asked them why I was brought into the station in my condition and ordered that I be seen by a doctor immediately. I will now have to undergo another operation ....

The best known Australian song of all time. It is generally attributed to Banjo Paterson. The story goes that Banjo was told about the shooting suicide of a Samuel Hoffmeister beside the Diamantina River on 2nd September 1894. He was supposed to have been one of the striking shearers involved in the burning down of the Dagworth Station shearing shed. This was at least one of the stories that inspired him to write Waltzing Matilda at Dagworth in 1895, though some say he merely adapted the song rather than writing the original. In any case his words are quite different from the words normally sung today, except in the lesser known "Queensland version", the tune for which is believed to have been written in the 1950s. This version was arranged by Marie Cowan in 1903 for Jimmy Inglis, who had heard the song being sung by Boer war veterans in Sydney pubs, and wanted to use it in a Billy Tea promotion. A matilda means a swag, or a bedroll, and to waltz matilda is to hit the road carrying a swag. The tune was adapted by Christina McPherson from "Bonnie Wood O' Craigielea" probably from hearing it played by a marching band some months earlier. Among the interesting discussions on the Mudcat site is a suggestion that the song is an allegory on the 1891 sheep shearers strike, which is dealt with more directly in the song "Ballad of 1891".: www.youtube.com You can see a playlist of my Australian songs here: www.youtube.com For lyrics and chords, see my website: www.raymondcrooke.com. + Informações

My arrangement of "Waltzing Matilda." I hope that you enjoy my arrangement of this great song!!! Please free to comment, and to "PLEASE RATE" the video..."THANKS!" The photos are of various places in Australia. Some history of this classic song: The words to the song were written in 1895 by Andrew Barton Paterson, also known as "Banjo" Paterson a famous Australian poet, and the music was written (based on a folk tune) by Christina Macpherson, who wrote herself that she "was no musician, but she would do her best." Paterson wrote the piece while staying at the Dagworth Homestead, a bush station in Queensland. While he was there his hosts played him a traditional Celtic folk tune called "The Craigeelee", and Paterson decided that it would be a good piece to set lyrics to, producing them during the rest of his stay. The song narrates the story of an itinerant worker making a crude cup of tea at a bush camp and capturing a sheep to eat. When the sheep's ostensible owner arrives with three policemen to arrest the worker, he drowns himself in a small lake and goes on to haunt the site. The lyrics contain many distinctively Australian English words, some now rarely used outside this song. These include: swagman a man who travelled the country looking for work. The swagman's "swag" was a bed roll that bundled his belongings. waltzing derived from the German term auf der Walz, which means to travel while working as a craftsman and learn new techniques from other masters before .... + Informações

A trailer for the new picture book Christina's Matilda by Edel Wignell, illustrated by Elizabeth Botté, published by IP Kidz (Interactive Publications) 'Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda, Who'll come a-Waltzing Matilda with me?' Everyone knows the words. Many people know that the Australian poet 'Banjo' Paterson wrote them. But how may people know the origin of the tune? In 1895 a young woman named Christina Macpherson sat down and played a marching tune she'd heard. 'Banjo' Paterson, who was visiting Christina's brother, liked it and wrote the words of a song to it. That song was 'Waltzing Matilda'. 'Banjo' became famous, and so did 'Waltzing Matilda'. But Christina's part in the song's creation was forgotten and she disappeared from history until the 1970s. Come a-waltzing with Christina now and discover her story -- beginning in the first year of her life, when she encountered the ruthless bushranger Dan Morgan... Edel Wignell is interested in history and folklore. Her first two collections were: A Boggle of Bunyips (1981) and A Bluey of Swaggies (1985). In the last chapter of A Bluey of Swaggies, Edel told the story of the creation of the song 'Waltzing Matilda', and included Christina Macpherson who provided the tune. Luckily, in 2002, Edel met Diana Baillieu, a great-niece of Christina, who generously shared information and photographs from the Macpherson Archive. See Edel's website: www.edelwignell.com for more information on the research and writing of this book .... + Informações
