Mehta wants Mabira 3.22 min. | 0 avaliação | 188 exibições The controversy over the President's move to give away part of Mabira forest for sugarcane cultivation hits another phase with environmentalists now directly pitted against business mogul, Mahendra Mehta. This as Mehta affirmed his interest in acquiring part of the forest reserve to expand his plantations to increasing sugar production in the country. Environment activists however say that they will take Mehta head-on and vow to carry out mass demonstrations across the country so as to protect one of Uganda's biggest natural forests. The latest reaction from environmentalists over the planned giveaway of Mabira forest comes a day after businessman; Mahendra Mehta of the Sugar Corporation of Uganda SCOUL reaffirmed his position in acquiring part of Mabira forest reserve. This was reportedly at a meeting between the businessman, environmentalists and the President Yoweri Museveni in Ntungamo district, Western Uganda. Media reports indicated that on the 3rd of September 2011, Mehta had given up his intentions of acquiring the 7100 hectares of the reserve. Against the impasse, environmentalists have now vowed to take businessman head-on through the courts of law or carry out mass demonstrations across the country. They also say that the donor community should engage government to battle against the give away citing that Uganda is signatory to a number of key international and regional conventions that protect forests.
