O projeto que deu origem ao caça multifuncional Fw 190, surgiu no outono de 1937, através do interesse do RLM ou Reichluftfahrt-Ministerium (Ministério da Aviação do Reich), por um possível backup ou futuro substituto para o Messerschmitt Bf 109. Uma das características chave do projeto, um motor radial refrigerado a ar, foi também uma afronta aos assistentes técnicos do RLM, que até então pregavam que o caça ideal, deveria ser dotado de motor em linha refrigerado a líquido, por suas características aerodinâmicas e de potência. No entanto, esta ousadia na verdade era uma decisão estratégica perfeitamente lógica. No final da década de 1930, o caça padrão da Luftwaffe era o mítico Messerschmitt Bf 109, projetado por Willy Messerschmitt. O Bf 109 utilizava um motor Daimler Benz em linha. A decisão por utilizar um motor radial, tinha fundamento em não demandar ainda mais a já sobrecarregada produção de motores em linha, o que tornava o Fw 190 uma alternativa muito atraente. The Focke-Wulf 190A-5 features its original BMW motor and was restored to the exact condition it was in during its service in World War Two. This was the first time these two aircraft were in the sky together since WWII. Both of these aircraft belong to Paul Allen's Flying Heritage Collection in Everett, Washington, home of the flying warbirds. The Bf 110's lack of agility in the air was its primary weakness. This flaw was exposed during the Battle of Britain, when some Bf 110-equipped units were withdrawn from the battle after very heavy losses and redeployed as night fighters, a role to which the aircraft was well suited. The Bf 110 enjoyed a successful period following the Battle of Britain as an air superiority fighter and strike aircraft in other theatres. The Focke-Wulf Ta 154 Moskito was a fast two-engine German night fighter aircraft designed by Kurt Tank and produced by Focke-Wulf late in World War II. Kurt Tank's team at Focke-Wulf had been working for some time on a fast attack bomber aircraft called the Ta 211, so named because it planned to use an uprated Jumo 211R engine. The plane was a high-wing twin-engine design that bore a strong resemblance to the US' Grumman F7F Tigercat, and was built primarily of plywood bonded with a special phenolic resin adhesive called Tego film.[1] The only large-scale use of metal was in the pressurized cockpit. Design work started before World War II began but engine problems prevented the aircraft from attaining operational status with the Luftwaffe until mid-1944. Compared with Allied fighters of its day, including the jet-powered Gloster Meteor, it was much faster and better armed. One of the most advanced aviation designs in operational use during World War II, the Me 262 was used in a variety of roles, including light bomber, reconnaissance and even experimental night fighter versions. Me 262 pilots claimed a total of 542 Allied kills (although higher claims are sometimes made) against the loss of about 100 Me 262s. The Allies countered its potential effectiveness in the air by relentlessly attacking the aircraft on the ground and while they were taking off or landing. The later Me 321 B-1 variant had a crew of three and was armed with four 7.92 mm (.312 in) MG 15 machine guns. In spring 1942, the remaining Me 321s were withdrawn from service in Russia in anticipation of the planned Operation Herkules, the invasion of Malta, in which a fleet of the gliders hauled by He 111Zs were to be used. The plan was abandoned due to a lack of towing aircraft. In 1943, the Me 321s were returned to Russia to be used in a projected operation to relieve General Friedrich Paulus' besieged army at Stalingrad, but by the time they reached the front line, no suitable airfields remained and they were sent back to Germany. Following the cancellation of the Stalingrad operation, the Me 321 gliders were either mothballed or scrapped, though some were converted into the powered variant, the Me 323 with six 895 kW (1200 hp) engines. This was the biggest land-based cargo aircraft of World War II.
