Living with Eating Disorders - part 1 9.07 min. | 4.714286 avaliação | 19115 exibições Courtesy of www.genericforyou.com - Patients talk about diagnosis and living with Eating Disorders. Eating disorders are conditions characterized by abnormal eating habits that may involve either insufficient or excessive food intake to the detriment of an individual's physical and emotional health, binge eating disorder, bulimia nervosa, anorexia nervosa being the most common specific forms in the United States, Though primarily thought of as affecting females (an estimated 5--10 million being affected in the US), eating disorders affect males as well (an estimated 1 million US males being affected). The causes of eating disorders are complex and poorly understood, though it is clear that they are often associated with other conditions and social situations; for example, one study found that girls with ADHD are many times more likely to develop certain eating disorders and another found that women raised in foster care are many times more likely to develop bulimia nervosa. It is generally thought that peer pressure and idealized body-types seen in the media are also a significant factor. While proper treatment can be highly effective for many of the specific types of eating disorder, the consequences of eating disorders can be severe, including death (whether from direct medical effects of disturbed eating habits or from comorbid conditions such as suicidal thinking).. + Informações |

Size Zero and the Media: Helping the illness to last - Living with an eating disorder 3.33 min. | 5.0 avaliação | 437 exibições What part, if any, does the media play in relation to eating disorders? Drawing on her experiences of a severe eating disorder, Melissa Wolfe explores the role of the media in relation to her illness, examining the different impact or relationship with the media at key stages in her eating disorder. "My eating disorder had really been about taking control and being what I considered good. Being thin was the consequence, and liking this feeling kept me trapped, but, in many ways, this was just a big distraction from the real causes of my eating disorder." Melissa's blog about her life can be found here: www.findingmelissa.co.uk She spoke as a part of the Gresham College lecture on 'Eating Disorders' on the 13th of February 2010 at the Museum of London. The full transcript, video and audio are available free from the Gresham College website: www.gresham.ac.uk. + Informações |

TogetherweR Thursdays: Eating Disorders, Internet Support & the ANAMIA Study Going on NOW! 11.33 min. | 5.0 avaliação | 377 exibições The Internet is an indispensable resource for those with chronic illnesses (mental and physical) who are isolated from people in their offline social sphere. I know this to be true personally because I am disabled and rarely leave my home. Were it not for online connections, I would be cut off from others completely in a very damaging way. In the case of eating disorder sufferers, social situations are particularly challenging because of anxiety/insecurity and also the virtually ubiquitous presence of food. Perhaps most importantly, ED's are not a socially acceptable topic (for sufferers OR people in general). There is a lot of stigma and discomfort regarding the discussion of eating disorders. Even ED sufferers who have close relationships offline (with family or friends) often voice difficulty when it comes to sharing about their ED. How is the Internet uniquely suited to ED sufferers for garnering support? We can connect with relative anonymity; on OUR terms; log off or not even log in when not up to it; and connect with other sufferers for support. The most compelling reason, perhaps, is that one can search for and encounter individuals who suffer with the same conditions. In an offline social sphere, people are much more hesitant to violate personal and social boundaries to share about their private plight. Here, we can find others who suffer similarly! Okay, the dreaded issue now: ProAna Sites. Why do ED sufferers go? Principally, to network with other sufferers .... + Informações |

New Eating Disorder Recovery Tattoo 0.78 min. | 0 avaliação | 9680 exibições "NEDA" symbol and "Recovery Happens" text pair perfectly in grass green and freedom sky blue to create my new recovery tattoo!!! The meaning of this tattoo is to remind me that RECOVERY DOES HAPPEN and is POSSIBLE. It's a reminder to fight. The NEDA symbol is an acknowledgement to all those living with eating disorders. I have also used this symbol to honor those who are deceased due to eating disorders. This symbol reminds me of a HEALTHY, FUNCTIONAL, BODY IN MOTION which is what I aspire to one day have. It has a beautiful abstract curvy shape that represents good health and movement... fluidity of life and recovery. Any ballet dancer will see a curvy body in coupe position! See it?! How cute! I put this on the back of my neck to make a bold statement to those who come across it and it's message. I hope this tattoo will share strength with others as well as with myself : ) I chose green for the symbol because that is the color of the ED awareness ribbon and sky blue for the text because recovery is like a big open sky of freedom! I need to credit my Mother for bringing the words "Recovery Happens" into my head while we were doing a public piece of street art with a tree of life and the words "Recovery Happens" in the middle of the tree... from there this phrase was engrained in my head and held deeply in my heart.. + Informações |
