Filmed for the upcoming series of documentaries "Gettin' the Blues", this features the talents of harpist Brian Lynam and pianist Steve "Big Man" Clayton. STEVE CLAYTON was born in Birmingham, England, on September 1st 1962. He began to show an interest in music at the age of 10. This prompted his father to buy an old upright piano and shipped him off for weekly piano lessons, which he would keep up the next five years. Towards the end of music lessons, his music teacher composed a blues for him to learn. The different tones and rhythms were something totally new to somebody learning the classics. This new found music had an enormous effect on him: the record collection mounted, spending all his pocket money on records by Cow Cow Davenport, Albert Ammons and Memphis Slim, to name only a few. His time was spent at the piano, trying to reproduce the sounds he was hearing. It didn't take long for Steve Clayton to find his way into his first blues band after leaving school, and he would spend the next few years learning his craft in numerous local bands, being hailed as "The Ivory Maradona" and "The Big Man of Boogie Woogie".The "Big Man" was requested to back visiting US artists like Louisiana Red, Cary Bell and Shuggy Otis, he toured Europe with them, he learnt from them.He is also the man pounding the keys on the award winning CD "He knows the blues" by Otis Grand. A Townsend Miller column dated November 17, 1973 notes: "It's been a hectic but wonderful week in Austin. It ends tonight - but what a night it is! Tom T. Hall, with Chip Taylor, closes four nights at Armadillo, and energetic Doug Kershaw ends the week with two shows tonight at Castle Creek. But that's not all: Uncle Walt's Band is back home with their intriguing sound at Toad Hall. Steve Fromholz is at Saxon Pub, Alvin Crow at Cricket Club, Kenneth Threadgill at Shakey's, Doak Snead at Bevo's, and Freda and the Firedogs at Tumblewood." The program is broadcast each weekday from KFFA in Helena, Arkansas, United States and has won the George Foster Peabody Award for broadcasting excellence and is currently broadcast from the KFFA studio located in the Delta Cultural Center in Helena. The first broadcast of King Biscuit Time was on 21 November 1941 on KFFA in Helena, and featured the African-American blues artists Sonny Boy Williamson II (Rice Miller) and Robert Lockwood, Jr. Williamson and Lockwood played live in the studio and were the key musicians in the original studio band, the King Biscuit Entertainers. Other musicians who joined the original band were Pinetop Perkins on piano and James Peck Curtis on drums. Williamson left the program in 1947 but returned for a stint in 1965 just prior to his death. Fluent in Romanian and German and having studied chemical engineering, he is parachuted into Romania to assume the identity of Captain Jan Tartu, a member of the fascist Iron Guard. He makes his way to Czechoslovakia to steal the formula of a new Nazi poison gas and sabotage the factory where it is being manufactured. However, his contact is arrested before he can arrange for a job in the factory. Tartu is assigned work as a foreman at a munitions plant instead.
