This video is for educational purposes only Composed by Clay Hammond Depending on the source, Little Johnny Taylor was either born in Memphis, TN. as Johnny Lamar Young, or Johnny Lamont Merritt in Gregory, AR. The only fact that is nailed down is that he was born on February 11, 1943. In 1950, he moved to Los Angeles, CA. with his parents and was soon featured in his young age as a singing member of the gospel group The Mighty Clouds of Joy. Influenced by Little Willie John, he later moved to secular music. He made his debut blues/R&B recordings in 1960 fronting Paul Clifton and his Band on two 45 RPM's on the tiny Swingin' label. It wasn't until 1963 when he signed with the Galaxy label, that he achieved any success. His debut record for the label "You'll Need Another Favor" was a minor R&B hit. But then he recorded "Part Time Love" that went to number one on the R&B charts and even crossed over to the pop charts at number sixteen. Taylor stayed with Galaxy until mid-1969, not racking up any more hits for the label. He then moved over to Ronn Records out of Shreveport, LA. charting again with "Everybody Knows About My Good Thing" in 1971, and "Open House At My House" the following year. While he was at Ronn, he also recorded with Ted Taylor (no relation) as duet partners. Taylor only recorded sporadically after that.
