While growing up, I watched a LOT of thunder and lightning storms, but NEVER have I caught a strike on film, and NEVER have I been this CLOSE to it... All without sound but in great condition visually. http The Alaskan Air Force was activated on Elmendorf Field 15 January 1942 to manage the buildup of the Army Air Forces in Alaska. It was redesignated the Eleventh Air Force on 5 February 1942. Following the Japanese bombing of Dutch Harbor in the eastern Aleutian Islands and the occupation of Attu and Kiska in the western Aleutians in early June 1942, the Eleventh Air Force launched an air offensive against the Japanese on the two islands. Missions were flown initially from Cape Field on Umnak Island in the eastern Aleutians and later from fields built on Adak and Amchitka. The Alaska Flute Circle had a live performance in Anchorage and I played my original song Rain Dance. This version of my song creates a little story...if you can imagine, how a predator bird, the Laughing Kookaburra and a scavenger bird, the Sea Gull with a haunting cry went from being enemies to becoming friends. Together they convinced an old Shaman to create a Rain Dance song to save the people and animals from drought and starvation. The Shaman then plays the song on his ancient drone flute at the end of which culminates in a drenching rain bringing new life and fertility to all. In the song I play a Native American drone flute, (key A), an eagle wing bone whistle replica, lightning box and a rain stick. We played at the Title Wave book store during Anchorage Folk Festival week. The gull photo is my own taken at Potter Marsh in Anchorage and the Kookaburra photo is from Wikipedia.org and was certified as free for public domain use for any purpose. Upper-atmospheric lightning or upper-atmospheric discharge are terms sometimes used by researchers to refer to a family of electrical-breakdown phenomena that occur well above the altitudes of normal lightning.
