A firm with a high amount of debt is said the be highly leveraged where a firm with a low amount of debt is not. Notice below that one of the formulas used to measure financial leverage is the debt to equity ratio. All else equal, a firm with higher financial leverage will have a higher beta; therefore it will be more risky than a firm with low financial leverage.
