Nelson honed his craft in the latter days of the big band era and then was hired by Capitol Records to do some arranging for some of their artists. One of his first assignments was to assist Les Baxter on a record date with Nat King Cole. The result of that session was Nat's "Mona Lisa", and from that point forward, Nelson became one of the leading staff arrangers and orchestra conductors in the US. On occasion Nelson would record on his own, and he even had a #1 hit with "Lisbon Antigua" in December of 1955. Nelson Riddle has arranged music and conducted the orchestra on some of the most famous popular recordings in music history for the likes not only of Nat King Cole, but Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Ella Fitzgerald and many others. In 1960 he composed the theme music for a new television series starring Martin Milner and George Maharis called "Route 66". "Mona Lisa" is a song written by Ray Evans and Jay Livingston for the Paramount Pictures film Captain Carey, USA (1950). It won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for 1950. The arrangement was by Nelson Riddle and the orchestral backing was played by Les Baxter and his Orchestra. The soundtrack version by Nat King Cole spent eight weeks at number one in the Billboard singles chart in 1950. Also, Cole's version of the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1992. The Billboard sales charts of 1950 also showed significant sales on versions by Dennis Day and Harry James. In 1986, it was used as the theme to the British film Mona Lisa. An uncredited version of Mona Lisa plays in the background of one scene in Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window (1954). The song was used in the wedding scene of the NBC mini-series, Witness to the Mob, in 1998. In 1939 Johnny Desmond formed his own singing group. The group was first called the Downbeats, but after being hired to work with Bob Crosby's big band in 1940, it was renamed the Bob-O-Links. The group appeared on 15 commercial recordings by the Crosby orchestra, including two charted hits, "You Forgot About Me" (which reached No. 15), and "Do You Care?" (No. 18). In the middle of 1941 Desmond decided to leave the Bob-O-Links to go solo. He became the featured vocalist for Gene Krupa's band, replacing Howard Dulaney, in September, recording over a dozen songs, the last of which was "All Those Wonderful Years", a song from the movie Keep 'em Flying, which reached No. 21 on the US charts. In 1942 he enlisted in the United States Army, but his military service was in fact a continuation of his singing career. He was a member of Glenn Miller's Army Air Forces Orchestra and from November 1943 until some time in 1944 he toured Europe, mainly serving as a replacement for Tony Martin. He made a number of radio broadcasts with the Miller band and was even given his own show by the British Broadcasting Corporation, "A Soldier and a Song." When the war ended, he took a job on The Breakfast Club, a radio variety program out of Chicago. He made a number of charted hit recordings: "Don't You Remember Me?"
