Songwriters-producers and record label owners Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff made Philadelphia the soul capitol in the 1970s. Gamble and Huffs label Philadelphia International had a stable of artists that included the OJays, McFadden & Whitehead, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, Lou Rawls and Dee Dee Sharp. Their records featured the duos trademark sound: lush string orchestrations, a powerful rhythm section and a disco beat. They also worked with Dusty Springfield, Wilson Pickett, and Jerry Butler among others. In 1990, Gamble and Huff won a Grammy for best R&B song, awarded for Simply Reds cover of the Blue Notes 1972 hit If You Dont Know Me By Know. And in 1999, they won the Grammy Trustees Award. Led Zeppelin's infamous return to the stage in Philadelphia's JFK Staduim in July 1985 to support Bob Geldof's international "Live Aid" event to bring relief to the Ethiopian famine. Introduced by Phil Collins, the band takes to the stage with Tony Thompson on drums & Collins tagging along. This clip has been cleaned up: the green hues from the 20 yr old + tape has been removed, the brightness & contrast have been balanced out. The audio has been synchronized to the FM broadcast captured on an old cassette tape. That audio was pretty messed up & had lots of dropouts, hopefully the results are satisfactory. Rapp -- the group's leader -- choreographed their dance steps and invented the routines that they performed during their sets. After playing after-school gigs and local shows as a foursome for a while, they later added saxophonist Lennie Baker to the lineup. While still in high school in late 1957, they were working a record hop as the intermission entertainment, when a local businessman named John Madara spotted the band.
