Aretha Franklin's Spanish Harlem 3.62 min. | 4.9157896 avaliação | 29307 exibições NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT INTENDED Aretha Franklin's 1971 masterpice recording, 'Spanish Harlem' was released in July of 71' and zoomed to the top of the No.1 position on Billboard's Soul Singles charts, the week ending August 28, 1971. 'Spanish Harlem was scheduled to appear on her now classic LP, 'Young Gifted & Black' but was withheld and issued into 'Aretha's Greatest Hits' album. Composed by Jerry Leiber and Phil Spector, 'Spanish Harlem' was originally recorded by Ben E. King in 1960, after his departured with the Drifters. Aretha's piano solo in the song was reportedly too long, so Arif Mardin had to splice where her last word was, into her solo. If you listen closely, you can hear the splicing of her voice erupt quickly as the piano solo begins. No Copyright Infringement intended.. + Informações |

Spanish Harlem 3.00 min. | 5.0 avaliação | 365 exibições The mighty Ben E. King had his first hit as a soloist after leaving the Drifters with this lovely tune by Jerry Leiber (familiar as half of the Coasters' dynamite songwriting team of Leiber and Stoller) and Phil Spector (familiar). So anyway, here am I with me 12 and bass and some added percussion, plus maybe a few extra voices here and there. OK, so not "maybe" then. "Definitely." Oh also, I have no idea what's up with all the light show on the bass video clip. What the hey.. + Informações |

Ben E King - Spanish Harlem 2.82 min. | 4.96975 avaliação | 541330 exibições Jerry Leiber & Phil Spector wrote Spanish Harlem. Released on the last day of 1960. Got up to #10, #15 R&B chart. Romeo Penque does the nice touch? of sax - a soprano sax (1:50). Out of favor for decades (think Sidney Bechet), the soprano began making a comeback about this time. Benjamin Earl King (born September 28, 1938), better known as Ben E. King, is an American soul singer. He is perhaps best known as the singer and co-composer of "Stand by Me," a US top 10 hit in both 1961 and 1987 and a #1 hit in the UK in 1987, and as one of the principal lead singers of the R&B vocal group The Drifters. King was born Benjamin Earl Nelson in Henderson, North Carolina and moved to Harlem, New York City, New York, at the age of nine. In 1958, he joined a doo wop group called The Five Crowns. Later that year, The Drifters' manager fired the members of the group and replaced them with The Five Crowns, who had performed several engagements with the Drifters. Nelson co-wrote the first hit by the new version of the Drifters, "There Goes My Baby" (1959). He also sang lead, using his birth name, on "Save the Last Dance for Me", a song written by Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman, "Dance With Me", "This Magic Moment", "I Count the Tears" and "Lonely Winds". King only recorded ten songs with The Drifters, including a non-single called "Temptation" which was later redone by Johnny Moore. Ben E. King career was so brief with The Drifters, The Drifters manager George Treadwell never gave Ben E. King a .... + Informações |

Girl Groups - The Story Of A Sound (1/5) 14.98 min. | 5.0 avaliação | 7986 exibições A girl group is a popular music act featuring several young female singers who generally harmonise together. Girl groups emerged in the late 1950s as groups of young singers teamed up with behind-the-scenes songwriters and music producers to create hit singles, often featuring glossy production values and backing by top studio musicians. In later eras the girl group template would be applied to disco, contemporary R&B, and country-based formats as well as pop. The Chantels released the 1958 song "Maybe". The Shirelles, who had had some minor R&B hits, hooked up with Brill Building songwriters, including Gerry Goffin and Carole King, who wrote "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" for them. The song became a number one pop hit in early 1961. Other songwriters and producers quickly recognized the potential of this new approach, and recruited existing acts (or, in some cases, created them anew) to record their songs in a girl-group style. Phil Spector recruited The Crystals, The Blossoms, and The Ronettes, while Goffin and King handled much of the output of The Cookies. Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller would likewise foster The Dixie Cups, The Shangri-Las, and The Exciters. Other important girl group songwriters included Ellie Greenwich, Jeff Barry, Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann. The Motown label also masterminded several major girl groups, beginning with The Marvelettes and later with Martha and the Vandellas, The Supremes, and The Velvelettes. Jay Black & The Americans - "Some Enchanted Evening" (1965) 2.30 min. | 0 avaliação | 1059 exibições Jay and the Americans was a pop music group popular in the 1960s. Their initial lineup consisted of John "Jay" Traynor, Howard Kane (né Kirschenbaum), Kenny Vance (né Rosenberg) and Sandy Deanne (né Yaguda), though their greatest success on the charts came after Traynor had been replaced as lead singer by Jay Black. They were discovered while performing in student venues at New York University in the late 1950s. They auditioned for Leiber and Stoller, who gave the group its name. In the manner of the time, Leiber and Stoller wanted to extend this to "Binky Jones and the Americans," but Traynor declined to be known as Binky Jones his whole career. He instead offered up "Jay," a family nickname, and it suited everyone. With Jay Traynor singing lead, they first hit the Billboard charts in 1962 with the tune "She Cried," which reached #5 (later covered by The Shangri-Las, Aerosmith, and others). The next two singles didn't fare nearly as well, and Traynor left the group. Jay's solo singles made little impression, but one, "Up And Over" issued on ABC in 1966 since became Northern Soul classic. David Black (né Blatt) of "The Empires" took his place (after first agreeing to adopt the name Jay Black), and Empires' guitarist Marty Sanders (né Kupersmith) also joined. Black sang lead for the rest of the group's major hits. They returned to the charts in 1963 with "Only In America," a song originally meant for The Drifters. Other notable hits for Jay and the Americans were "Come a .... + Informações |
