Leaf Hound foi formado em 1969 sob o seu nome original, Black Cat Bones. Black Cat Bones contava então com o guitarrista Paul Kossoff eo baterista Simon Kirke que saíram da banda para formarem o Free. Black Cat Bones lançou um álbum para Decca Records intitulado Barbed Wire Sandwich. Eles substituiram seu vocalista logo após o lançamento do álbum, acrescentando Peter French para os vocais. O guitarrista Rod Price partiu pouco depois para se juntar ao Foghat e French acrescentou seu primo Mick Halls na guitarra. Logo após o Black Cat Bones mudou seu nome para Leaf Hound. Neste momento a banda consistia em French nos vocais, guitarra com Halls, os irmãos Brooks, Derek e Stuart, na guitarra e baixo respectivamente, e Keith George Young, na bateria. Growers Of Mushroom foi gravado no Spot Studios em Mayfair, Londres, no final 1970. Logo após os irmãos Brooks partiram e Ron Thomas preenchido no baixo. A banda excursionou a Europa com apenas quatro membros na banda e então lançam o single "Drowned My Life in Fear" o único álbum de Leaf Hound Alemanha. Os produtores lançaram o álbum "Growers Of Mushroom" pouco depois (com todas as faixas do álbum auto-intitulado), mas por esta altura o French já tinha partido para se juntar ao Atomic Rooster. Peter French seria também mais tarde juntou-se à banda americana de Hard Hock Cactus.
