German-Spanish singer Laura López Castro is joined by her composing partner and guitarist Don Philippe (aka Philippe Kayser) to play songs from their latest album OPTATIVO. Some are inspired by López Castro's own history: the stories she has heard from her Catalonian grandmother, who was imprisoned under Franco for selling beans without a license. Others were stirred through conversation with the Sin Papeles, anonymous African labourers who bring in Spain's peach harvest each year. « Optativo », das dritte Studioalbum des Songwriterduos ist ein Album, das einen Abschiedsschmerz in sich trägt, wie alle bisherigen Alben, das sich aber frei gemacht hat, das unprogrammatisch ist und undogmatisch. Es enthält zehn Songs, die auf eine eigensinnige Weise reich und bescheiden zugleich klingen. 2006 veröffentlichen Laura López Castro & Don Philippe ihr Debüt, dessen Wurzeln ganz klar in der Musik zu finden sind, die Ende der 50er Jahre in Rio de Janeiro als Reflex auf den amerikanischen Jazz entstand hieraus entwickelt das Duo seine unverkennbare Handschrift. Das zweite Album 2007 ist eine Art Hommage an die Vorbilder Ihres Erstlingswerkes. Sozusagen eine Musikalische Inhaltsangabe und bedeutsame Danksagung an die großen Komponisten und Poeten, die als Inspirationsquellen dienten. Drei Jahre hat sich das Duo nun für das neue Album Zeit gelassen. Die Kompositionen sind nach wie vor von südamerikanischer Musik beeinflusst, was man nun aber hört, ist, dass die Klänge aus dem Hochland Südamerikas in einen urbanen Kontext gesetzt wurden. Durch Reduktion der Komplexität, durch die Kunst des Weglassens und den Mut zur Abstraktion, ist das Werk dem Independent näher gerückt. Es sind Songs, die einen Reifeprozess widerspiegeln; Songs, die die beiden Musiker im Vergleich zu den letzten Alben einige Anstrengung gekostet haben und die dennoch so unangestrengt daher kommen, als würde sie ein Nachmittagswind über die Pfirsichfelder von Lleida wehen.
