Kitty Wells' 1950s and 60s country music tunes still surprise unsuspecting listeners. She wore demure gingham dresses and sang sweet plaintive melodies, but Wells was a radical. Some of her songs all but declare infidelity and promiscuousness: "I don't claim to be an angel, my life's been full of sin." "I Don't Claim to Be an Angel" wasn't the first time those issues had been broached in country music, but Wells made hits. The Grand Ole Opry tried to ban the song, but, as Laura Cantrell tells Kurt Andersen, "the horse was out of the barn." Wells revolutionized what a woman could sing about and paved the way for Loretta Lynn and Tammy Wynette a generation later. Cantrell's new record, "Kitty Wells Dresses," is a top-to-bottom tribute. She performs "I Don't Claim to Be an Angel," from the album with her band: Jon Grabof, Kenny Kosek, Jeremy Chatzky, and Mark Spencer. This is the lovely title track from Laura Cantrell's 2002 sophomore album, "When The Roses Bloom Again". The song was written by AP Carter. Cantrell (born 1968) moved to New York City from her native Nashville to study law and accounting at Columbia University. She began deejaying on the university's radio station, WKCR, until joining WFMU after her graduation in 1993. Her singing career began when she was at college, performing with various local groups. She later befriended John Flansburgh of They Might Be Giants, with whom she sings on the band's Apollo 18 (1992). Flansburgh also released her first solo material: an EP on his "Hello CD of the Month Club" in June 1996, which was reissued in 2004 as The Hello Recordings. Cantrell reached wider recognition in 2000 with her debut album, Not the Tremblin' Kind. The album reached the attention of legendary UK DJ John Peel, who wrote of it, "It is my favourite record of the last ten years and possibly my life". She went on to record five sessions for Peel and dedicated her 2005 album, Humming by the Flowered Vine, to his memory.. + Informações

This song, "Bees", is from Laura's album, "Humming By The Flowered Vine", a 2005 release that I found in the window of Road Records in Dublin my first time to Ireland. My little hideaway hotel room on Mercer Street had a cd player, so I spent some of my down time in Dublin listening to Laura. Her plaintive singing on "Bees" was good company late at night when the city was sleeping and I was still awake and far from home. I play Laura Cantrell on a regular basis on my radio show, "Better Days" - www.coopradio.org - and feel a kinship with Laura as she has her own radio show, "Radio Thrift Shop".
