CHINATOWN ? The video, recorded on Sunday, May 8 (2011) in Columbus Park, begins by showing officers handcuffing a man who is lying on his stomach while a group of onlookers loudly protest. After the man is brought to his feet, his face appears bloodied and the agitated crowd begins to surround the group of officers. "Back up, you're going to get maced," one officer can be heard saying on camera, while waving a canister at those trying to intervene. The same officer then appears to grab an object from his belt and swing it at the crowd as they move closer to the scene. A police source confirmed that officers from the 5th Precinct brought the man into the stationhouse because he was playing music in the park without a legally required permit and also did not have identification. The incident is under internal investigation, the source said. Since the video was posted on YouTube, garnering nearly 62000 views as of Wednesday, the office of Councilwoman Margaret Chin has been flooded with hundreds of emails complaining about how the incident was handled. The individual who posted the video did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Police are shown in the video subduing the man while trying to handcuff him. Locals said the arrest caps off a long-simmering conflict between police seeking to pacify nearby residents making noise complaints and musicians in the park, who often violate laws requiring them to have permits to use speakers. ....Here's a video to annoy whoever it is that seems to hate my night shots! :P Anyway, this past Friday evening (for reasons as-yet unknown to me) the Chicago Transit Authority's Red Line was rerouted out of the State Street Subway and onto the elevated, via the route normally taken by the Brown Line, the Lake and Wabash sides of the Loop, the South Side Main Line as far as 17th St Tower, and the 18th St Viaduct to Cermak-Chinatown station via the non-revenue ramp at Federal Junction. On the North Side, the switch from the inner tracks to the outer tracks was done at either Clark Junction or Armitage Interlocking- trains seemed to go either way as traffic levels warranted through the night. I started off at the Chicago (Avenue) station on the Brown/Purple Lines. I ended up here after attempting to board a Red Line at the subway Chicago Ave station, only to find it temporarily closed to passengers because of the reroute. In addition to the detouring Red Line trains seen here, are the usual Brown Line and Purple Line (Evanston) Express trains. Later at Armitage, a Red Line train operating on the outer tracks normally used by the Brown and Purple Lines, slows until it gets a better signal to proceed. With the North Side Main Line taking on half again the number of trains it usually does, things got rather congested. A train immediately following this one meant this train skipped Armitage. Then I crossed the Don Valley Parkway and cycled by Regent Park, a public housing development from the 1950s and 1960s which has experienced significant social problems in the last few decades. A portion of Regent Park has been demolished to make way for a brand-new mixed housing development that will include low-income housing as well as middle-income housing. Right across the street from Regent Park is Cabbagetown, a neighbourhood that was originally settled by Irish immigrants that started to be settled as early as the late 1840s after a wave of poor immigrants left Ireland due to the Irish potato famine. These poor residents grew cabbage in their front yards, hence the name Cabbagetown. In the last few decades Cabbagetown has become increasingly popular and has seen extensive gentrification. I cycled through the relatively poor downtown east side to the intersection of Gerrard and Yonge; Yonge Street is the east-west dividing line in Toronto and used to be the longest street in the world.
