Visit www.gardenclips.com for more garden videos. Last year, I began planting flowers in the five pots outside of the Whitneyville Food Center, the very best grocery store I have ever shopped in. The proprietor and I agreed on a modest proposal, and I planted five pots with (mostly) edible plants featured. The lettuce was a big hit, more commented upon than much more showy flowers. At first I laughed this off, but then I began to wonder what elemental chord had been struck by this modest little plant. I surmise that the appreciation of the sight of leafy greens in spring is not just based on visual pleasure, but that there is some deep connection with the culinary delight and dietary necessity for the sometimes bitter but always wonderful lettuce. Some dieticians maintain that whatever is in season is what our bodies have evolved to best deal with and use to full advantage in fall and winter, heavier foods rich in carbohydrates, like pumpkins, potatoes and parsnips are what we crave and should eat, and in spring, we move to the cleansing but still nutritious leafy greens, with peas and other legumes for protein for the hard work in the fields. This simple approach to eating would necessarily aid the 'eat locally' movement, and would also make for, I admit, some very dull potlucks. I do not successfully ascribe to this regimen, preferring a pineapple once in a while, or an orange, or an apple out of season. www.b2review.com Lettuce, and specifically "heirloom gourmet lettuce" is a typical crop kitchen gardeners suggest growing in the winter. Almost everyone I speak with and message will state that their lettuce crop grows much better in the winter than in the summer and I have also found this to be the case. This lettuce was planted just a couple months ago in the soil and then replanted into these larger containers. Lettuce seems to prefer the shorter days, partial shade, and plenty of hydration. I have been keeping this lettuce on top of pallets so that the frequent watering will drain easily from the bottoms of the containers. The soil is a mix of compost from organic kitchen scraps and works wonderfully with a little sand or other materials to help the water drain well. This lettuce is in 18 gallon and 5 gallon containers but in general you do not even need a gallon container to grow it since it stays close to the ground with a fairly small root structure depending on the gourmet variety. The lettuce in this video was just picked yesterday for some turkey burgers but we only harvested about 1/3 of it or less so that it will keep growing and producing more lettuce for months to come. Add gourmet lettuce to any kitchen garden for a tasty treat during the winter months for a sustainable harvest over the whole season! Many people often focus on exotic herbs for their supposedly magical benefits and forget that sometimes your common and simple garden variety herbs have some amazing nutrition available within them. They are also usually easy to grow and easy to find seeds for. In this video I talk about red romaine lettuce (lactuca sativa var. longifolia) and rocket otherwise known as arugula (eruca vesicaria sativa). They are both excellent sources of nutrients rating consistently high on the mineral charts. Coloured lettuces such as red romaine lettuce can contain three times as many anti-oxidants as their plain green varieties, and cruciferous vegetables, such as rocket, also contain powerful anti-cancer, anti-microbial and even anti-diabetic compounds called sulforaphanes. La lechuga pertenece a la familia Asteraceae y su nombre botánico es Lactuca sativa. Es una planta herbácea de pequeño porte, anual y autógama. La raíz, es pivotante, corta y con numerosas ramificaciones. Las hojas, de color verde brillante y sin espinas, se colocan en roseta y quedan desplegadas al principio, manteniéndose así durante todo su desarrollo en el caso de algunas variedades, o acogollándose más tarde en el caso de otras. Las hojas inferiores son enteras y presentan un peciolo corto, mientras que las superiores son sésiles, más redondeadas y ovales. El borde de los limbos puede ser liso, ondulado o aserrado. Al madurar emite un tallo, cilíndrico y ramificado sobre el que se inserta la inflorescencia con capítulos florales amarillos, dispuestos en racimos o corimbos. El fruto es un aquenio que contiene una única semilla provista de un vilano plumoso. Las variedades de lechuga más cultivadas se pueden clasificar en tres grupos botánicos: Las lechugas tipo romanas, que son aquellas que no forman un verdadero cogollo, presentando hojas oblongas, con bordes enteros y un nervio central ancho. Las lechugas tipo acogolladas, que se caracterizan por formar un cogollo apretado y denso semejante a la col. Y las lechugas de hojas sueltas, que como su nombre indica presentan las hojas sueltas y dispersas. La plantación de la lechuga (alface) (Lactuca sativa) suele hacerse con plántulas obtenidas en semillero. Transcurridos 30 ó 40 días después de la siembra, cuando la plántula tiene entre 5 y 6 hojas verdaderas, se lleva a cabo la plantación. La plantación se realiza en caballones a una altura de 25 cm, para que las plantas no estén en contacto directo con la humedad, evitando así los ataques producidos por hongos. La plantación debe hacerse de forma que la parte superior del cepellón quede a nivel del suelo, para evitar entre otras, podredumbres a nivel de cuello. Durante los meses fríos, se recomienda el acolchado del suelo, empleando, láminas de polietileno negro o transparente. También es recomendable la utilización de mantas térmicas, para reducir el riesgo de posibles heladas. El marco de plantación, suele ser de 0,7 a 1 m entre surcos y de 0,3 m entre plantas, colocando 2 hileras de plantas en cada una de las camas. Tras la plantación y durante los primeros días post-trasplante se recomienda el riego por aspersión, para facilitar el arraigo de las plantas. Los riegos se darán de manera frecuente y con poca cantidad de agua, procurando que el suelo quede aparentemente seco en la parte superficial, para evitar podredumbres tanto de cuello como de la vegetación que toma contacto con el suelo.
