This is the karaoke version of Kyu Sakamoto's song "Sukiyaki" with Romanized pronounciation to help non Japanese speakers learn to sing it. He is the original artist for this song around 1963 and then later on, this has been translated into English. Kyu is a popular Japanese singer from the 1960's and it's long before my time. I think he died in the 1980's. But then music is timeless and independent of language! This is the karaoke version with a contemporary model acting out the video. The music sounded like it has a full orchestra and is less bland than the record version. I have not figured out why the audio part does not work. Kyu Sakamoto (Hisashi Oshima) was born on November 10, 1941 in Kawasaki City (Kanagawa Prefecture), Japan. Ue o Muite Aruko (I Look Up When I Walk) was released in Japan in 1961. The music was composed by Hachidai Nakamura. The lyrics written by Rokusuke Ei, is said to have written this after his heart was broken by the actress, Meiko Nakamura. It was released in the United States in 1963 and became an International hit. To date, this is the only song that has made it to #1 in the US by a Japanese Singer. Louis Benjamin, the head of the UK's Pye Records, heard the song while visiting Japan. He brought a copy home and had Kenny Ball & the Jazzmen do a version of it, which he re-titled "Sukiyaki" after his favorite Japanese dish, and had it go into the top ten. Shortly thereafter, DJ Richard Osbourne of the radio station KORD in Pasco of Washington State started playing the original version by Kyu Sakamoto, using the "Sukiyaki" title. There were frequent requests for the song and Capitol picked up the record. The song went to #1 in Billboard for three weeks and sold over a million copies in the United States. Kyu Sakamoto was killed on 12 August 1985 at the age of 43 when JAL Flight 123, a 747 was bound from Haneda Airport in Tokyo to Osaka. The bulkhead of the plane failed due to a tail strike incident seven years prior. A music critic once remarked that our calling this song "Sukiyaki" was the equivalent of sending "Moon River" to Japan and having them call it "Beef Stew". When Capitol Records obtained the US distribution rights to this Japanese song, they called it "Sukiyaki" simply to associate the music to its Japanese singer, but the actual name of the song is "Ue o muite aruko" which translates into English as "I look up when I walk". It's a song about how a man whistles and walks upright to hold back the tears through the seasons of the year. The singer is Kyu Sakamoto, a very popular musical artist at the time in Japan, who came to a very unfortunate end in the single most deadly airplane crash in history, that of Japan Airlines Flight 123 which killed over 500 people on board crashing into a mountain outside of Tokyo on Aug. 12, 1985. The old and popular Enka style was now replaced with the Kay?kyoku which was inspired by western pop and rock. Kyu's solo career was inaugurated with the love song "Ue o muite aruk?" written by Rokusuke Ei and Hachidai Nakamura. The song was first heard on the NHK entertainment program "Yume de aimashou" on August 16, 1961. It was a great success and was released on a red vinyl on October 15. It topped the most sold record from the release until January 1962, three months later. The real breakthrough came two years later in 1963 when the owner of the British record company Pye Records, Louis Benjamin visited Japan. During his stay he heard the song being played several times and he became fond of it. He decided to bring it back to England and it was here that "Ue wo muite arukou" got its rather peculiar name change. Because of the title being too hard to pronounce, and the idea that customers wouldn't understand what it was all about the song was renamed to something that sounded both catchy and Japanese: "Sukiyaki". Kenny Ball and His Jazzmen recorded an instrumental version of the song and it became a great hit in England.
