Krakatoa: The Last Days, Clip 1 - Tsunami 9.75 min. | 4.8151817 avaliação | 319027 exibições Wide Screen HD Version: www.youtube.com From the BBC docu-drama, "Krakatoa: The Last Days." The movie is also known as "Krakatoa: Volcano of Destruction" and aired on Discovery Channel. The movie brings to life the journals and recollections of four witnesses who survived the cataclysmic eruption of Krakatoa in August of 1883. This segment features the Beijerinck (Beyerinck) family in the village of Ketimbang, Sumatra. Controller Willem Beijerinck was one of seven assigned to oversee the growth and development of the Dutch colonies. Krakatoa had been building up activity, sending forth little explosions and a column of smoke from May to July. Many viewed this phenomenon as spectacular yet harmless. But to a few, such as Johanna Beijerinck, Willem's wife, this was an ominous sign of terrible things to come. This is her account from her journal. On August 26, 1883, Krakatoa entered into its paroxysmal phase, with eruptions on a virtually continuous basis and explosions heard every 10 minutes. A black cloud of ash arose from its depths to 17 miles (27km) high. The combined result of such heavy volcanic activity birthed the first of the tsunami that would destroy the coastal villages surrounding the volcano. If you would like to read Johanna Beijerinck's in-depth account of her family's survival through this volcanic catastrophe, please visit: Survivor Diary -- Johanna Beyerinck dsc.discovery.com If you want to see the full docudrama, you can catch it on Discovery Channel .... + Informações |

Anak Krakatoa Volcano Eruption 1.32 min. | 4.720339 avaliação | 131258 exibições The eruption spat 1m wide rocks into the sea, like pieces of salt. The shock wave can be seen racing down the sides of the volcano, throwing up dust storms. The vent blew ash clouds 2km into the atmosphere. The explosion could be heard 3000km away just like the original explosion in 1883. Our boat subsequently capsized when the wave hit us ten minutes later. Krakatoa: The Last Days, Clip 6 - Pyroclastic Surge 6.05 min. | 4.866667 avaliação | 62390 exibições Wide Screen HD Version: www.youtube.com From the BBC docu-drama, "Krakatoa: The Last Days." The movie is also known as "Krakatoa: Volcano of Destruction" and aired on Discovery Channel. The movie brings to life the journals and recollections of four witnesses who survived the cataclysmic eruption of Krakatoa in August of 1883. The Beijerinck (Beyerinck) family, along with 3000 Ketimbang survivors, had settled further inland. They survived a tsunami and the destructive ear-shattering force of Krakatoa's explosions. They thought the worst had past, but one more is about to strike. A pyroclastic surge is a fluid mass of turbulent gas and rock fragments which is ejected during volcanic eruptions and are similar to pyroclastic flows except that it has a higher proportion of gas to rock particles. Pyroclastic flows can generate pyroclastic surges. Because a pyroclastic surge is "lighter" than a pyroclastic flow, it can travel much faster at speeds of 350 mph carrying massive destructive kinetic energy and can actually climb higher ground. Pyroclastic surges can be "hot" containing gas and steam at temperatures above 100 degrees Celsius (212 degrees Fahrenheit) to as much as 800 degrees Celsius(1472 degrees Fahrenheit). They can also be "cold" with temperatures below 100 degrees Celsius. Aside the temperature factor, both hot and cold pyroclastic surges can still be lethal, depending on the type of gases they carry. Hot pyroclastic surges can cross significant bodies of water on .... + Informações |

The movie is also known as "Krakatoa: Volcano of Destruction" and aired on Discovery Channel. The movie brings to life the journals and recollections of four witnesses who survived the cataclysmic eruption of Krakatoa in August of 1883. This segment features Captain Lindeman's account on the ship, Governor General Loudon, at sea on the Sunda Strait in which Krakatoa resides. The ship, owned by the Netherlands Indies Steamship Company, served as an excursion vessel and mail steamer, based out of Batavia (present day Jakarta), Indonesia. Hot ash and small particles of pumice that Krakatoa had spewed into the atmosphere began to fall in great, continuous amounts, blanketing a wide area over the surrounding sea and coasts, hiding the sun as if nightfall had descended. Ash is dangerous everywhere, which can start fires and make the exercise of breathing extremely difficult, but more so to vulnerable ships on the open sea as Captain Lindeman is about to find out. Read Captain Lindeman's very informative in-depth account of his ship's survival through this catastrophic event: Survivor Diary -- Capt. Lindeman dsc.discovery.com Note: There's NO DESTRUCTION in this one video out of the series. I included it because ash is a major component of a volcanic eruption. This clip shows Captain Lindeman's wisdom in keeping the ship afloat. If you want to see the full docudrama, you can catch it on .... + Informações |

Krakatoa: The Last Days, Clip 4 - The Wave (HD) 6.75 min. | 4.921875 avaliação | 40622 exibições Full Screen Version: www.youtube.com From the BBC docu-drama, "Krakatoa: The Last Days." The movie is also known as "Krakatoa: Volcano of Destruction" and aired on Discovery Channel. The movie brings to life the journals and recollections of four witnesses who survived the cataclysmic eruption of Krakatoa in August of 1883. Captain Lindeman had been fighting the ash fall that threatened to capsize his ship. Meanwhile the collapse of Rakata Island had created mammoth sea waves which were radiating out from Krakatoa's epicenter and had already wiped out Sebesi Island northeast of Krakatoa. The Loudon, anchored at Lampong Bay near the village of Telok Betong, north of Krakatoa, was about to encounter one such giant wave. A passenger, NH van Sandick, on the Loudon gives an account: "Suddenly, at about 7 am, a tremendous wave came moving in from the sea, which literally blocked the view and moved with tremendous speed. The Loudon steamed forward in such a way that she headed right into the wave. One moment... the wave had reached us. The ship made a tremendous tumbling; however, the wave was passed and the Loudon was saved. The wave now reached Telok Betong and raced inland. Three more similar colossal waves followed, which destroyed all of Telok Betong right before our eyes. The light tower could be seen to tumble; the houses disappeared; the steamer Berouw was lifted and got stuck, apparently at the height of the cocoanut trees; and everything had become sea in front of our .... + Informações |

The movie is also known as "Krakatoa: Volcano of Destruction" and aired on Discovery Channel. The movie brings to life the journals and recollections of four witnesses who survived the cataclysmic eruption of Krakatoa in August of 1883. The Beijerinck (Beyerinck) family leaves the village of Ketimbang, Sumatra for their hut situated on higher ground further inland, along with 3000 survivors on August 26, 1883 after a tsunami struck the village earlier in the day. The family arrived at their hut around midnight and settled down, exhausted but relieved, believing the worst was behind them. The next day, August 27, four enormous explosions occurred early in the morning about one hour apart. The northern two-thirds of Rakata Island, one of the three islands which comprised Krakatoa, had collapsed. The last explosion was the loudest sound in recorded history, and was heard as far away as Perth, Australia. Its sound pressure level was at approximately 180 dBSPL at a distance of 100 miles (160km). To imagine its impact, the human threshold for pain is at 134 dBSPL and short-term effect hearing damage can occur at 120 dBSPL.
