His highly individual style was influenced by movements in art that included expressionism, cubism, and surrealism. He was, as well, a student of orientalism. Klee was a natural draftsman who experimented with and eventually mastered color theory, and wrote extensively about it. His works reflect his dry humor and his sometimes child-like perspective, his personal moods and beliefs, and his musicality. Su biografía artística se inicia en Munich, donde empieza a estudiar pintura en 1898. Dos años después ya está en la clase de Franz von Stuck, en la Academia, y su vida se reparte entre la casa familiar en Berna y la capital bávara. Viaja a Italia ya París, fundamentando así sus conocimientos sobre arte antiguo y moderno. En 1906 se casa con Lily Stumpf, una pianista a la que había conocido siete años antes. Klee se sumerge en la activa vida artística de Munich, donde todas las tendencias modernas conviven con el Jugendstil, el modernismo alemán.
