The history of the Dutch Kingfisher Sky starts in 2001, when drummer Ivar de Graaf leaves the gothic metalband Within Temptation, which was on the verge of a big international breakthrough. Together with the classical trained female singer Judith Rijnveld he writes compositions that are unbound to any genre or style. This musical style is hard to describe, but the term progressive myth-rock covers it nicely. Think of Heart, Clannad, Tori Amos, Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel, Mike Oldfield and Pink Floyd on one side - and progrock like Porcupine Tree on the other side. In short: contrasts - spheric as well as hard and dreamy and rocking. In 2006 they make a demo and in October 2006 Kingfisher Sky signs a record deal with Suburban Records. Hallway of Dreams Kingfisher Sky live @ The Underground Lelystad May 10th 2008. Maaike Peterse on Violoncello playing live with Kingfisher Sky KINGFISHER SKY are the headliners of tonight. Their debut album was very well received and it slowly put them in the premier ranks of the Dutch gothic metal scene. And they lived up to that expectation. Its a shame, that they have to play for an almost empty hall, because only fifty or sixty people showed up. The band opens with The Craving. Besides Ivar de Graaf (formerly Within Temptation drummer), Daan Janzing and Edo van der Kolk (both on guitar), George van Olffen (keyboards), Eric Hoogendoorn (bass) and singer Judith Rijnveld, the band also introduces a special guest female cello player Maaike Peterse who plays a big part of the set and not without merit! Maaike Peterse is a great eye-catcher and she gives the sound of Kingfisher Sky a very positive boost. However, the other bandmembers are also working very hard to reach the highest possible level. During the instrumental part, bassplayer Eric bangs his head like a madman. Its a very energetic sight for all the fans. Most of tonights songs were taken from their album Hallway Of Dreams, like The Craving, Big Fish, Balance Of Power and title track Hallway Of Dreams. What caught my attention most though was a song, called The Attic. It really came alive thanks to the great vocal parts of singer Judith Rijnveld.
