Kids Near Water - distance over time British punk rockers Kids Near Water formed in April of 2000, in Exeter, counting on with the works of a four-piece team, lead by Brian (vocals, guitar), along with John (bass), Nik (drums), and Simon (guitar, vocals). Initially named Young Church, the British quartet soon decided on changing their designation to Kids Near Water. All of them having previous band experiences, the group swiftly settled on recording its first demo tape after a few rehearsals. The recording eventually conquered a considerable success around the local underground music scene, and shortly afterward, they managed to issue it as their first disc, the EP Extended Player One, in December of 2000. Not long after, the quartet started regularly playing live, ultimately gaining exciting and promising reviews by the local media. Building a sustainable reputation due to their energizing performances, the band conquered a place at several local summer festivals, therefore increasing their growing notability. After yet another regular touring season, including a show alongside Sum 41, the Kids entered the studio to record their second disc. On October 11, 2009, a dramatic event occurred on an Oceanic Society whale watching boat near the Farallon Islands, 25 miles west of San Francisco. The vessel Salty Lady came upon a group of humpback whales, which is not unusual as it had been sighting whales pretty much every whale watching weekend, However, on this trip, four humpback whales approached the boat and for over an hour circled the boat, nearly brushing up against it, and seemed to make contact with the 45 passengers on board. One even lifted its head out of the water with passengers reaching out to pet it. There is no doubt that these whales sought out human contact and some form of communication was taking place. Panhandling from strangers and sleeping among the rush of commuters, their wants are minimal. "We need some heat, food, a little money and nothing more," says one, forgetting that his daily diet also includes an unhealthy dose of vodka, cigarettes and glue sniffing. "When it is worst, we try to make money for food by prostitution," admits another. Police brutality is a daily reality for the children of Leningradsky.
