As September of 1814 dawned, the War of 1812 isn't looking good for the United States. After burning Washington, DC to the ground, the British forces set their sights on Baltimore, Maryland. As the British fleet descends on the city, a young American lawyer named Francis Scott Key is on an official mission of parley to the British fleet to secure the release of a political prisoner. While on board the British ships, however, the fleet unleashes a powerful, 25 hour bombardment on Fort McHenry, the city's bastion of defense. Key, powerless, looks on at the bombardment. Caught up in the confusion of the battle, Key turns to writing a poem...a poem which is destined to become the National Anthem of the United States. Who was Francis Scott Key? How did he end up in Baltimore Harbor on this fall evening? And how did Key's firsthand account of that battle become the most important poem in American History? On May 8, 2009, the US Coast Guard Cutter James Rankin deployed the Francis Scott Key buoy on the location where our national anthem was written. The buoy goes out each year in the spring, and is retrieved in the fall. Located in an area rich with American history, scholars believe the span crosses within 100 yards (100 m) of the site, marked in the water off the bridge by a stars and striped painted buoy, where Francis Scott Key witnessed the bombardment of Fort McHenry on the evening of September 12, 1814. That battle inspired Key to write the words of the Star Spangled Banner. Located just southeast of the bridge are the ruins of Fort Carroll. The Francis Scott Key Bridge, also known as the Outer Harbor Bridge or simply the Key Bridge, is a continuous truss bridge spanning the Patapsco River in Maryland, USA. The bridge was opened in March 1977 and is named for the author of the Star Spangled Banner, Francis Scott Key. The bridge is the outermost of three toll crossings of Baltimores Harbor. Upon completion, the bridge structure and its approaches became the final links in Interstate 695 (the Baltimore Beltway). Despite the I-695 signage, the bridge is officially considered part of Maryland Route 695.[4][5] The span is 1200 feet (370 m) long and is four lanes wide. The following information is from...www.usflag.org Francis Scott Key was a respected young lawyer living in Georgetown just west of where the modern day Key Bridge crosses the Potomac River. Now let's go back to the summer of 1813 for a moment. At the star-shaped Fort McHenry, the commander, Maj. George Armistead, asked for a flag so big that "the British would have no trouble seeing it from a distance". Two officers, a Commodore and a General, were sent to the Baltimore home of Mary Young Pickersgill, a "maker of colours," and commisioned the flag. Mary and her thirteen year old daughter Caroline, working in an upstairs front bedroom, used 400 yards of best quality wool bunting. They cut 15 stars that measured two feet from point to point. Eight red and seven white stripes, each two feet wide, were cut. Laying out the material on the malthouse floor of Claggett's Brewery, a neighborhood establishment, the flag was sewn together. By August it was finished. It measured 30 by 42 feet and cost $405.90. The Baltimore Flag House, a museum, now occupies her premises, which were restored in 1953. On the other side of the bridge, I turn right on M Street, and then left in the alley next to Sweet Green. I go up the alley to Prospect Street and turn left (west).
