Bates originally wrote the words as a poem, Pikes Peak, first published in the Fourth of July edition of the church periodical The Congregationalist in 1895. In this episode of Cheap Family Travel Tips (www.cheapfamilytraveltips.com), we traveled to the Manitou & Pikes Peak Cog Railway outside of Colorado Springs. At the top of the list of things to do in Colorado Springs is a visit to Pikes Peak, and the cog railway is the way to go. You can't beat Rocky Mountain railroad trips for beauty and this ride is no exception. The views from the top of Pikes Peak inspired Katharine Lee Bates to write "America the Beautiful" and you can certainly appreciate those words from the summit. Cheap Family Travel loved our ride from Manitou Springs up the mountain while listening to the history of Pikes Peak. We enjoyed our time at Summit House where we sampled world famous donuts. Any trip to Colorado should include a visit to its most famous fourteener. Be prepared for crazy weather, amazing scenery, and wildlife, like marmots and big horn sheep.
