"The Star-Spangled Banner" is the national anthem of the United States of America. The lyrics come from "Defence of Fort McHenry", a poem written in 1814 by the 35-year-old lawyer and amateur poet, Francis Scott Key, after witnessing the bombardment of Fort McHenry by the British Royal Navy ships in Chesapeake Bay during the Battle of Fort McHenry in the War of 1812. The poem was set to the tune of a popular British song written by John Stafford Smith for the Anacreontic Society, a men's social club in London. "The Anacreontic Song" (or "To Anacreon in Heaven"), with various lyrics, was already popular in the United States. Set to Key's poem and renamed "The Star-Spangled Banner", it would soon become a well-known American patriotic song. With a range of one and a half octaves, it is known for being difficult to sing. One day after the death of Osama Bin Laden was announced by American President Obama, Lauren Hart sang a raucous rendition of God Bless America to the sold out crowd in Philadelphia. The 19000 plus fans in attendance at Wells Fargo Center, stood singing along and holding American flags for the duration of the traditional Kate Smith-Lauren Hart rendition. A large cheer and USA chant broke out after Hart's performance. Smith, who is displayed on the video board at centre ice alongside Hart, is famous in Philadelphia for her rendition of the song prior to Game 6 of the Flyers 1974 Stanley Cup Final victory over Boston. There was also a moment of silence held for service men and women in America before the game. The event was reminiscent of past iconic performances of the American National Anthem, such as Whitney Houston's Star Spangled Banner performance at Super Bowl XXV in 1991, during the first Gulf War, and Wayne Messmer's singing of the Anthem at the 1991 NHL All-Star Game in Chicago later that year.
