NATO conference discusses women, peace and security in the Middle East and North Africa. Leading NATO officials and female representatives from Tunisia, Jordan, Libya, Yemen, Morocco and Rwanda discussed progress made in promoting the role of women in peace and security at a conference from 28-29 March. The aim of the conference was to review the implementation of the United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1325 in the wake of the first anniversary of the start of the Arab Awakening. The two-day talks focused on the role of women in the political processes in the Middle East and North Africa and on the importance of raising awareness of the current human rights violations which many women in the region are still facing. It was also highlighted that women should play a more prominent role during peace and conflict resolution talks. Sixteen women took part in the event, including Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Mrs Tawakkol Karman, from Yemen and peace activist Ms Hibaaq Osman, from Somalia. "Women should benefit from the same opportunities as men and sit at the decision-making table, when it comes to peace building," Mrs Karman insisted, adding, "we know ten years have elapsed and still all the decisions related to war are predominantly taken by men ." Yemen Nobel peace laureate... During the Yemeni revolt of 2011, Karman Tawakkul student assemblies held in Sana'a to protest against Ali Abdullah Saleh and his regime. The UN Security Council is set to vote on a resolution calling on Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh to immediately step down after 33 years in power. All five permanent members of the Security Council back the measure, which "strongly condemns" government violence against demonstrators. The popular uprising Yemen continues despite more attacks by government forces, including dozens of demonstrators murdered by snipers in recent days. Karman has been in New York City all week to press for international pressure on the Saleh regime. She is the first Arab woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize. A 32-year-old mother of three, an outspoken journalist and Yemeni activist, Karman has agitated for press freedoms and staged weekly sit-ins to demand the release of political prisoners from jail. She founded Women Journalists Without Chains and has played a leading part in the struggle for women's rights and for democracy in Yemen. Kaman is a 32-year-old journalist and the head of the Yemeni non-profit group, Women Journalists Without Chains. She was detained for a time during the political unrest earlier this year. She is the first Arab female to win the Nobel Peace Prize and is believed to the youngest winner of the peace prize to date, slightly edging out the Irish activist Mairead Corrigan who won in 1976.
