Karine is great talent some say a voice like Barbara Dickson.I disagree she has a voice of her own Karine's 2The suns comin' over the hill" a powerful yet simple song Following the breakthrough of her debut album "Faultlines", which won Best Album at the 2005 BBC Folk Awards, and its more lush and polished 2006 successor "Scribbled in Chalk", Karine took time out to give birth to her son in 2007. In an extraordinarily creative and productive maternity leave, she recorded not one but two albums for release on her own micro label, hegri music. The first of these, "Fairest Flooer", is a stark, dark and intimate collection of Scottish traditional songs, which Karine herself describes as "late night dram music". This return to her origins as a respected Scots traditional singer had a profound influence upon her current bittersweet collection of original songs "This Earthly Spell". Shrewsbury Folk Festival's Darwin Song Project We're All Leaving written by Karine Polwart & Dave Gunning performed by Karine Polwart & Jez Lowe Darwin Song Project Concert Shrewsbury, March 19th 2009 In March 2009 eight folk singer/songwriters gathered together for a week long songwriting residential in rural Shropshire to create songs that had a relevance and resonance with Charles Darwin. The eight artists were Chris Wood, Karine Polwart, Stu Hanna, Rachael McShane, Krista Detor, Emily Smith, Mark Erelli and Jez Lowe. The whole concert was recorded for a CD release, and the 8 musicians reconvened at the Shrewsbury Folk Festival in August, to once again perform the 19 songs that were written during the week. Karine Polwart is a unique Scottish songwriter. Her work is sublime, intelligent, and provocative. In an interview with Colin Randall, she said, "I'm the kind of writer who writes about the world, rather than the inside of my own head. I do have a fascination with the underbelly of life, or more specifically with how people cope with their circumstances, and I have quite strong socio-political views. But they're tempered with an aversion to preaching. I think stories and metaphors and questions are better ways to raise issues than literal tub-thumping, so I guess that's the philosopher in me. I like to think people are mostly smart enough to draw their own conclusions." I'm happy to know this artist and to be friends with her.
