Jamieson "Junior" Brown (born June 12, 1952, Kirksville, Indiana) is an American country guitarist and singer from Cottonwood, Arizona. In 1985 Junior invented a double-necked guitar, with some assistance from Michael Stevens. Junior called the instrument his "guit-steel". When performing, Junior plays the guitar by standing behind it, while it rests on a small podium/music stand. The top neck on the guit-steel is a traditional 6-string guitar, while the lower neck is a full-size lapsteel guitar for slide playing. Brown has two guit-steels for recording and live work. The original instrument, dubbed "Old Yeller", has as its standard 6-string guitar portion the neck and pickups from Brown's previous stage guitar, a Fender Bullet. The second guit-steel, named "Big Red", has a neck laser-copied from the Bullet neck, but in addition to electric guitar pickups, both the standard and lapsteel necks use an identical Sho-Bud lapsteel pickup. There is a pocket in the upper bout of the guitar to hold the slide bar when it is not in use. Brown quickly became a local success in Austin, Texas as the house band at the Continental Club. His debut album was 1993's 12 Shades of Brown; it was followed by Guit with It later that year (1993 in music). A singer and demon guitarist whose raucous blend of country and rock & roll helped make him a successful crossover act, Junior Brown was born in 1952 and raised in the backwoods of Kirksville, IN. He first learned to play the piano from his father, and was exposed to country through radio and TV, becoming a fan of Ernest Tubb's music and television program. He became a professional musician at the tail end of the '60s, while still in his teens. After honing his guitar skills in relative anonymity throughout the '70s, Brown became an instructor at the Hank Thompson School of Country Music, an affiliate of Rogers State College in Oklahoma. There, while teaching under the auspices of steel guitar legend Leon McAuliffe, a onetime member of Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys, Brown met "the lovely Miss Tanya Rae," a student whom he would later marry in 1988 and who eventually joined his band as a rhythm guitarist and backing vocalist. At the same time, a dream prompted him to set about creating an instrument fusing a six-string guitar with its steel counterpart. Contacting guitar maker Michael Stevens in 1985, he developed the "guit-steel," a double-necked guitar combining the standard instrument with the steel. (A decade later, the two men reunited to update the "guit-steel," and Brown's cherry axe, "Big Red," was born.) Jamieson "Junior" Brown has released nine studio albums in his career, and has charted twice on the Billboard country singles charts. Brown's signature instrument is the "guit-steel" double neck guitar, a hybrid of electric guitar and lap steel guitar. Album review by Chris Herrington: Junior Brown combines Hendrix's ax, Johnny Cash's baritone, and the honky-tonkin', gear-jammin' persona of a Red Simpson or a Dave "Six Days on the Road" Dudley. That's the concept, anyway, and a heady one it is. But if Junior doesn't always overwhelm, he's so humble and good-natured he gets by anyway. And this might be why old fans didn't complain earlier this year when Brown traded in his very modest fame and "aw, shucks" Jerry Clower features and took a gig hawking Lipton Iced Tea. Inventor of the guit-steel, a regular electric guitar and a steel guitar combined into one instrument, Brown is the rarest of country performers, one who's gained a reputation as a player rather than a songwriter or a vocal stylist. Long Walk Back is his fourth album since debuting in 1990 and, throughout, it sticks to a set formula: standard-issue honky-tonk spiced with his now semilegendary guit-steel excursions and at least a couple of straight-up novelty tunes. The one departure is the only misfire: Former Jimi Hendrix Experience drummer Mitch Mitchell sits in on a couple of cuts, giving Brown an excuse to wank Hendrix-style in an attempt at cementing his technical prowess.
