SNATCH AND GRAB IT - Julia Lee - 1946 2.98 min. | 4.9466667 avaliação | 43173 exibições Snatch and Grab it by Julie Lee 1946 recorded from the original Capitol 78 RPM record and played on a Dual 1229 turntable My aunt knew Julie Lee, they use to sing at the same night club, my aunt gave me two 78 records that Julie Lee had given her that were made on a private label in Kansas City. They were one of a kind 78 records, and I took them to the University and had them transferred to a digital tape, which was sent to Bear Family Records in Germany to add to their 5 CD set of Julie Lee songs. . A popular entertainer who recorded frequently for Capitol during 1944-1950, Julia Lee's double-entendre songs and rocking piano made her a major attraction in Kansas City. She played piano and sang in her brother George E. Lee's Orchestra during 1920-1934, recording with him in 1927 and 1929 (including "If I Could Be with You One Hour Tonight") and cutting two titles of her own in 1929 ("He's Tall, He's Dark and He's Handsome" and "Won't You Come Over to My House"). Lee worked regularly as a single in Kansas City after her brother's band broke up. In 1944, she started recording for Capitol and among her sidemen on some sessions were Jay McShann, Vic Dickenson, Benny Carter, Red Norvo, and Red Nichols, along with many local players. After 1952, Julia Lee only recorded four further songs, but she was active up until her death in 1958.. + Informações |

Julia Lee - I Didn't Like It The First Time 3.02 min. | 5.0 avaliação | 5979 exibições VARIOUS: LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT THE BLUES - THE EVOLUTION OF WEST COAST BLUES California experienced a phenomenal growth in independent recording in the postwar years, after decades of dominance by the major labels. Millions had flocked there during the war years and they needed entertainment. It all began with 'The GI Sing-sation', Cecil Gant and his 'I Wonder', a blues ballad that caught the public's imagination. It was also a time for downsizing; the full Johnny Otis Orchestra backed Jimmy Rushing singing 'Jimmy's Round The Clock Blues' but such aggregations quickly broke up and the trend was for small quintets led by the likes of Joe Liggins ('The Honeydripper'), Saunders King ('SK Blues'), Buddy Banks ('Fluffy's Debut'), Jack McVea ('Open The Door Richard') and Roy Milton ('RM Blues'). Charles Brown ('Drifting Blues'), Jimmy Witherspoon ('Ain't Nobody's Business') and T-Bone Walker ('Call It Stormy Monday') set the fashion for cool, laidback blues, while Gene Phillips ('Stinkin' Drunk'), Amos Milburn ('Chicken Shack Boogie'), Joe Lutcher ('Rockin' Boogie') and Jimmy Liggins ('Cadillac Boogie') added a little heat to the pot. After Big Jay McNeely's 'The Deacon's Hop' and Wild Bill Moore's 'Rock And Roll', honking sax instrumentals became a major sales incentive. The market was crowded with pianist/singers like Little Willie Littlefield ('It's Midnight'), Ivory Joe Hunter ('I Almost Lost My Mind'), Jimmy McCracklin ('Beer Drinkin' Woman'), Roy Hawkins ('Why Do .... + Informações |

JAY MCSHANN'S KANSAS CITY STOMPERS (vocals by JULIA LEE): COME OVER TO MY HOUSE 3.37 min. | 0 avaliação | 647 exibições Vocalist Julia Lee (1902-58) was famous for her double entendre songs, or as she herself called them "songs my mother taught me not to sing) and here is one of example of the very special kind of songs that she sang during her career. She is here accompanied by Jay McShann (1916-2006) and his Kansas City Stompers. Jay McShann's , music became known as "the Kansas City sound" and he had a long career which was very varied. He played the blues but was also playing hard bop, and he played with such great jazz musicians like Charlie Parker and Ben Webster. I do not know the line up on this recording made in Kansas City, in November 1944 though. The recording is taken from a 10" vintage jazz compilation album "The History of Jazz, Volume 2, the Golden Era" released by Capitol records.. + Informações |
