A deleted song from 'The Wizard Of Oz', 'The Jitterbug' footage is all but lost except for home movies ... AND THIS! When it was first previewed in the summer of 1939, 'The Wizard Of Oz' was nearly two hours in length, which some believed to be too long. So a number of scenes were shortened, and several dropped entirely, such as 'The Jitterbug,' an elaborate number that came right before the winged monkeys captured Dorothy and her friends in the haunted forest. It's still referred to in the movie when the witch tells the monkeys, "I've sent a little insect on ahead to take the fight out of them!" No one is exactly sure why it was cut, since it took several weeks to choreograph, rehearse, and film, and cost quite a bit of money. The best guess is that it was too lighthearted for the dramatic tension of the story at that point, and unlike the rest of the musical numbers, it was extraneous and didn't advance the plot. This is one of my favorite segments from Judy's show. Judy had history with Martha Raye, both having been married to band leader, David Rose. She became engaged to David in May 1941, just 2 months after his divorce from Martha Raye. Despite planning a big wedding, the couple eloped to Las Vegas and married during the early hours of July 28th 1941, with her mother Ethel and her stepfather Will Gilmore present. Judy was 19 years old. While there is some controversy with details - Judy being forced into an abortion - essentially, the couple separated in January 1943 when Judy realized that David was too weak to fight for her and stand up to MGM. Lost for over seven decades, a recording of the original 'If I Only Had A Brain' for 'The Wizard Of Oz' was discovered in 2009. This recording sung by Judy & Ray Bolger was far more sedate compared to the version heard in the film; it was decided by the producers that a more energetic rendition would better suit Dorothy's initial meeting with the Scarecrow, and was re-recorded. It's always fun to share something like this. To my knowledge, this has not been widely broadcast. I used Oz photos, & especially love the colorful vintage posters. 'If I Only Had a Brain' was written by Harold Arlen (music) and EY Harburg (lyrics). Originally, the music was to be used for a song called 'I'm Hanging On to You' as part of the 1937 Broadway musical 'Hooray for What!'. The song was ultimately dropped from that show, and when the pair were later hired to do the songs for Oz, Harburg simply wrote new lyrics to the tune. Think for a moment about the world of 1904. The Wright Brothers' famous flight at Kitty Hawk occurred the previous year. Gasoline-powered automobiles, motion pictures, and the "wonder drug" aspirin were introduced to the public only 10 years before. Electric lighting and telephones were less than 25 years old, and still a novelty only read about by most Americans. Food was stored in ice boxes, and the horse-drawn ice wagon was a familiar site.
