Junior Walker (born Autry DeWalt Mixon, Jr., June 14, 1931 November 23, 1995 & the All Stars were signed to the Motown label in the 1960s, and became one of the label's signature acts. Walker was born Autry DeWalt Mixon, Jr. in Blytheville, Arkansas and grew up in South Bend, Indiana. His saxophone style was the anchor for the band's overall sound. The other original members of the group were drummer Tony Washington, guitarist Willie Woods, and keyboardist Vic Thomas. His career started when he developed his own band at the age of 14, in the mid 1950s as the 'Jumping Jacks'. His longtime friend Billy Nix (drummer) started his own group the 'Rhythm Rockers.' Periodically Nix would sit in on Jumping Jack's shows, and Walker would sit in on the Rhythm Rockers shows. Nix obtained a permanent gig at a local TV station in South Bend, Indiana, and asked Walker to join him and his keyboard player (Fred Patton) permanently. Shortly after, Nix would asked Willie Woods a local singer to perform with the group; shortly after Woods would learn how to play guitar also. When Nix got drafted into the United States Army, Walker convinced the band to move from South Bend to Battle Creek, Michigan. While performing in Benton Harbor, Walker found a drummer Tony Washington, to replace Nix.[1] Eventually, Fred Patton (piano player) left the group, and Victor Thomas stepped in. by request- for a good friend! don't know much about the dance, but this is one hell of a tribute to it! A roll call for one of Hitsville USA's most rocking bands: Junior Walker- saxaphone (of course!), Victor Thomas- organ, Willie Woods- guitar, James Graves- drums Motown was wise in not trying, at least for a couple of years, to polish Jr. Walker and the All Stars. What's wrong with a healthy dose of hot-house rock and funk? Here, the band gives a full-out assault on a step-by-step instructional on the dance, The Boomerang. This one deserves close listening becasue so much is going on below the surface: Willie Woods is playing a killer of a repeating, hypnotic riff from start to fade, which in turn is "answered" by one-syllable response of a second guitar. James Graves' drum work is a bit more subtle (and complex) here with more emphasis on the bottom range (notice how the bass drum more or less drives the song along) Victor Thomas echoes the style he employed on "Shotgun" by providing a THICK, testifying riff in response to Junior's vocal instructions. You can also detect the presence of Motown's Funk Brothers augmenting this immense track on bongos and tambourine and possibly another guitar or two. I'm certain that there dance floors had to issue flood warnings whenever this was played as it's such a hot number, who would have been able to resist the urge to get up and Do The Boomerang?
