Josie Miles (c. 1900 - 1953? 65 ?) was an American vaudeville and blues singer. She was one of the classic female blues singers popular in the 1920s. She was born in Summerville, South Carolina. By the early 1920s she was working in New York City, where she appeared in Eubie Blake and Noble Sissle's musical comedy Shuffle Along. In 1922 she made her first recordings, for the Black Swan Company, and later recorded for the Gennett, Ajax, Edison, and Banner Records labels. In 1923 she toured the African-American theatre circuit with the Black Swan Troubadours, and performed in New York City in James P. Johnson's revue Runnin' Wild at the Colonial Theatre. In that same year she also performed on WDT Radio in New York City. According to blues writer Steve Tracy, Josie Miles was characterized by "a light but forceful delivery that was not low-down but was nevertheless convincing." Her last recordings date from 1925. After the early 1930s, she devoted herself to church activities in Kansas City, Missouri, where she had settled. Here's a very scarce Edison Diamond Disc record from my collection and surely one of my favorites. Recorded on October 2, 1924 with Bubber Miley and the Kansas City Five, listen as Josie Miles belts out (and I DO MEAN belts out!) "Sweet Man Joe". This record plays with incredible volume and Josie sings so loud that my ears are still ringing...well, maybe that's stretching it a bit...but Josie really lets the recording horn have it during this, one of the very precious few Blues recordings that were pressed and released on Edison. The 'Old Man" must have been away on one of his camping trips with Henry Ford when Josie Miles recorded this because the lyrics surely border on censorship of the 1920's. Sales for this record were extremely poor indeed and few have survived. I was VERY pleased when I found this record years ago and even more pleased to find that it had been very well cared for! This record was played on a very early model A-250 Edison Diamond Disc Phonograph in my collection with the louvered sides and button start mechanism.
