It was also my most challenging and satisfying. I have always wanted to do an entire song on YouTube, so here it is! This song was arranged by David Wright for the Vocal Majority. I sang each part 8 times separately (8 Lead tracks, 8 Bass tracks, 8 Tenor tracks, and 8 Baritone tracks) to sound like an entire chorus. I also added 2 tracks for snaps and claps...a total of 34 tracks!! There are only 4 video feeds. I would have done more but Sony Vegas really starts dragging with 4 vids. The song is believed to have been composed by slaves in the first half of the nineteenth century. Some references suggest that it was copyrighted by Jay Roberts in 1865.[1] The first recorded version was by Harrod's Jubilee Singers, on Paramount Records #12116, in 1922 [2] (though some sources suggest 1924). Later recordings include those by Paul Robeson (1925), Mahalia Jackson (1958), Elvis Presley (1960), and Cassandra Wilson (1995). Ralph Flanagan adapted it under the title "Joshua". Ralph Flanagan and His Orchestra recorded the spiritual in New York City on March 1, 1950. It was released by RCA Victor Records as catalog numner 20-3724 (in USA)[3] and by EMI on the His Master's Voice label as catalog numbers B 9938 and IP 604. Early published versions include some parts in dialect, such as "fit" for "fought". The lyrics allude to the biblical story of the Battle of Jericho, in which Joshua led the Israelites against Canaan (Joshua 6:15-21). However, like some other spirituals, the words had a hidden meaning alluding to eventual escape from slavery - in the case of this song, "And the walls came tumblin' down."The lively melody and rhythm also provided energy and inspiration. This song from the African-American tradition refers to the Bible story of Joshua and his men who, bearing the ark of God, successfully brought down the walls of the city of Jericho simply by the loud playing of trumpets and other instruments. The message for the black slaves who sang this song was that if Joshua could defeat evil by blowing trumpets, then they too could eventually defeat the evil of slavery through the singing of such songs! The song was often performed by Paul Robeson in his concerts. It has also been recorded by the great gospel singer, Mahalia Jackson. You can find her rendition on YouTube. Here is the Gospel Choir of the Cascades singing the classic spiritual Joshua Fit the Battle. The soloists are Anne Du Fresne, Teresa Ross and Zoey Falkenstein. This performance was at the beautiful and historic Old Stone Church in Bend, Oregon on November 2nd. This concert was a special fundraiser for Britt Leis and Lia Koehn, a young Bend couple who were attacked while in Ecuador.
