When composer and orchestrator Tony Hatch walked through New York one day, a melody spontaneously 'popped up' in his mind. When he presented the basic outline of the song to Petula Clark, she immediately said she wanted to perform the song, if "lyrics would be added that would match the quality of the music". Hatch started writing...... and a few days later "Downtown" was 'born'. It became a huge hit, not only in the UK (where the only competition came from The Beatles) but also in the US and in some other countries worldwide. The song won numerous awards, was covered by an array of other famous vocalists of the time and .... still pops up today in films, theatre shows etc.. Here the Johnny Mann Singers, considered to be one of the better 'close harmony singer groups' of the sixties, bring a beautifully balanced version where female voices are being complemented by male (wordless) voices and vice versa. The sound in general is "sixties at its best" - the atmosphere of that "decade of hope and promisses" is being captured in just one song...... BEST SOUND AT 720p My Blue Heaven by the Johnny Mann Singers, and a nice version of this song from the budget label Sunset, a division of LIberty Records. A budge label or drugstore label as they were sometimes called. This is another 25 cent record I found at the flea market, that had to be thoroughly cleaned. At least the album cover didn't fall apart on this one like the other one, but it had no labels when I removed it from the album. I found them in like new condition inside the album, maybe they were so budgeted you had to affix your own labels, which I'll do with some 3M adhesive. The Johnny Mann singers were mostly found on Liberty records. Played on an Onkyo turntable with a Pickering XUV 4500Q cartridge, and direclty uploaded to the PC. + Informações
