Johnny Ray, an Oregon native, was one of the most controversial performers of his day. In live performance, he would beat up his piano, lie on the floor as if he were in pain, and add further animations to his singing. Sound familiar? It should since a lot of rock and roll performers who came after him, copied his animated performing style. Questions about his sexuality surfaced later adding further drama to the life of this 50's sensation. Shortly after he signed with Columbia Records, he entered the studio in October of 1951 and recorded a two-sided hit with vocal backing provided by the Four Lads. One side was "The Little White Cloud That Cried", and the other was this recording of "Cry". Both were two of the biggest hits of year 1951 and firmly established Johnny Ray on the pop charts for most of the decade.. + Informações

In late 1951 an unknown talent from a small town in Oregon recorded the song "Cry" written by a night watchman named Churchill Kohlman. Cry took off like a rocket and changed pop music forever. Johnnie Ray became a household name with nicknames such as The Cry Guy and Mr. Emotion. The two sung this song together on Frankie's TV Show in 1956. The Recording came out in 1957 but never charted in the US but did reach #27 in England. The show sounds corny by todays standards, but I guess that's the way we were back 50 years ago. Gee I miss thoes times.. + Informações

Johnnie Ray was an American singer, songwriter, and pianist who enjoyed major popularity for most of the 1950s. He has been cited by many critics as a major precursor of what would become rock and roll. His jazz and blues-influenced music and his animated stage persona made him one of the first teen idols. In 1951 his Cry and The Little White Cloud That Cried both reached #1 on the Billboard charts. In March, 1952, he had three songs at once in the Billboard Top Ten. His cover of Nat King Coles "Walkin' My Baby Back Home" reached #4 on the Billboard charts. His last major hit was "Just Walkin' in the Rain" in 1956.
