Compelling villain and visual grace keep second second installment in what studio hopes will become six-picture franchise going strong. "Kung Fu is dead!" Or so the rotund hero is told in this second installment of the Kung Fu Panda series from DreamWorks Animation, which itself is not taking the threat seriously, as the company is reportedly already mapping out plans for five entries in the franchise. Nor will the box office returns for the new film inhibit such long-range thinking, as the enhancement of 3D as well as a deeper, more involved storyline mark this as a slight improvement on the 2008 original, which raked in some $633 million worldwide. Creating ever-more compelling villains always represents a challenge for ongoing film series, from James Bond to Batman, so the introduction of a slim peacock who not only claims that, "China will be mine!" but also intends to eliminate kung fu, represents a real force to be reckoned with. At the same time, returning screenwriters Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger have nicely used the title character's search for his real father to provide a little depth and poignance to a character whose initial rambunctiousness was a bit grating but which has now been mellowed with a measure of self-reflection about his childhood. Not that the series has gone soft or serious. Not at all. In its short history, Blue Sky has produced the Ice Age franchise, Robots, Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who!, and Rio, each translating their sub-$100 million budgets into immense box office returns (sometimes exceeding half a billion dollars). Their 2011 venture, Rio, continues that trend while also being among the most critically acclaimed of the lot. Its animated protagonists are brightly exotic birds, the two leads a pair of macaws who are extremely rare and are thus the targets of bird smugglers based in Rio de Janeiro. The entire film is essentially comprised of chases of this awkward duo (and friends) by the evil humans and their cohorts in the animal kingdom. An unlikely romance between the macaws and the initial inability of the out-of-place, Minnesota-raised male of the pair leads to inevitable redemption. From what I gather, "Mars Needs Moms," coming to theaters March 11, is about a typical kid named Milo who doesn't want to be told what to do and smarts off to his mom. Later he goes to apologize and discovers his mother is being abducted by aliens who want Milo's mom to raise Martian children. Now it's up to Milo to get her back. With the help of some new and unexpected friends (not like that's ever happened in a Disney movie) they set out to liberate his mother. Although the idea is pretty out there, kids will love it. It's rated PG, so it's a pretty safe bet for all those who wish to keep their children sheltered from controversial issues. What kid can't relate to Milo -- someone who feeds his vegetables to his cat and jumps on his bed when his mom wants him to sleep? What parent hasn't had a mouthy kid who says hurtful things he doesn't mean in the heat of the moment? With the ideal mothering voice of Joan Cusack and the oddly realistic-sounding 9-year-old voice of 27-year-old Seth Green, this movie, though fairly predictable, can't go wrong. If you have kids, it might not be such a bad idea to spend Friday of spring break wearing 3-D glasses, with a child by your side. If you don't have kids, you'll probably end up waiting a few years and watching it when you're babysitting your niece on a random night.
