John McCutcheon's page folkmusic.com Christmas in the Trenches - John McCutcheon Christmas in the Trenches by John McCutcheon My name is Francis Tolliver, I come from Liverpool. Two years ago the war was waiting for me after school. To Belgium and to Flanders, to Germany to here I fought for King and country I love dear. 'Twas Christmas in the trenches, where the frost so bitter hung, The frozen fields of France were still, no Christmas song was sung Our families back in England were toasting us that day Their brave and glorious lads so far away. I was lying with my messmate on the cold and rocky ground When across the lines of battle came a most peculiar sound Says I, "Now listen up, me boys!" each soldier strained to hear As one young German voice sang out so clear. "He's singing bloody well, you know!" my partner says to me Soon, one by one, each German voice joined in harmony The cannons rested silent, the gas clouds rolled no more As Christmas brought us respite from the war As soon as they were finished and a reverent pause was spent "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen" struck up some lads from Kent The next they sang was "Stille Nacht." "Tis 'Silent Night'," says I And in two tongues one song filled up that sky "There's someone coming toward us!" the front line sentry cried All sights were fixed on one long figure trudging from their side His truce flag .... + Informações |

371. Christmas in the Trenches (John McCutcheon) 6.52 min. | 4.7586207 avaliação | 11438 exibições Early in World War soldiers on both sides were trapped in muddy trenches, exposed to the cold damp winter weather, sniper shots and deadly machine guns. But in 1914 something extraordinary happened. Defying all the rules about fraternising with the enemy, soldiers from both sides in the southern Ypres region of France, temporarily put aside their weapons and met in No Man's Land in a celebrated act of Christmas goodwill. Soldiers on both sides realised that they had more in common with each other than with the leaders of their countries who sent them out to fight each other. I first learnt of this incident through a musical stage play, "Oh, What a Lovely War," which was later made into a film. The story has been retold many times, but nowhere better than in this wonderful song, written in 1984 by American folksinger, John McCutcheon. Thank you, babybookworm003, for requesting this song. "Pretty Boy Floyd" (Woody Guthrie), John McCutcheon 4.32 min. | 5.0 avaliação | 496 exibições "Pretty Boy Floyd", performed by John McCutcheon (www.folkmusic.com) in concert at the Institute of Musical Traditions (www.imtfolk.org), Jewish Community Center of Greater Washington, MD, USA on September 18, 2011. John McCutcheon is a nationally touring troubadour described by The Washington Post as folk music's "Rustic Renaissance Man," a moniker flawed only by its understatement. Besides his usual circuit of major concert halls and theaters, John is equally at home in an elementary school auditorium, a festival stage or at a farm rally, but it is in live performance that John feels most at home.
