STEPPIN' OUT (1966) by John Mayall's Bluesbreakers 2.65 min. | 4.9379845 avaliação | 99212 exibições This is my second video of Eric Clapton playing with John Mayall's Blues Breakers (see also 'Hideaway' on my channel page). Like that one, this is also an instrumental, and was written by James Bracken. Steppin' Out was from the 1966 album by John Mayall's Bluesbreakers featuring Eric Clapton as lead guitarist. It is often referred to as The Beano album because the photograph on the album cover shows Clapton reading The Beano, a well-known British children's comic. Apart from being one of the most overall influential albums in blues-rock history, it was likely the first time anyone had heard a Gibson Les Paul guitar through an overdriven Marshall amplifier; this unique sound would become particularly influential. For more info on the equipment Eric used on this album, here is a link on the Gibson site. It is interesting that as well as the LP and Marshall, he used a Dallas Rangemaster treble booster, although some claim it was not used on the Beano album www.gibson.com The Bluesbreakers included John Mayall on harmonica, keyboards and a majority of the vocals, John McVie on bass, Hughie Flint on drums. On some songs, including this one, a horn section was featured, including John Almond, Alan Skidmore and Derek Healey, (misspelt on the sleeve as Dennis Healey). In 2003, the album was ranked number 195 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. (Much of the above info was adapted from Wikipedia). There is no video for this song, so I have .... + Informações |

John Mayalls Bluesbreakers - Live At Iowa State University Full DVD 87.65 min. | 4.97136 avaliação | 103632 exibições This DVD was filmed at Iowa State University circa 1987 and features John Mayalls Bluesbreakers including Walter Trout, Coco Montoya, Paul Hines, and Bobby Haynes. John Mayall is widely acknowledged as the father of British blues having baptized a whole generation of white, British musicians and an audience who might otherwise never have discovered the blues. Apart from having discovered in Eric Clapton, Peter Green, and Mick Taylor three of the most acclaimed guitarists of the rock era, his blues school fostered the talents of a roster of artists who have since profoundly influenced the course of Rock n Roll. Mayalls new incarnation of the Bluesbreakers, officially launched in 1984, included future stars in their own right, guitarists Coco Montoya and Walter Trout and quickly proved to be as innovative and technically gifted as their peers. This DVD brilliantly documents their abundant ability.. + Informações |

DRIVIN' SIDEWAYS (1967) by John Mayall's Bluesbreakers featuring Mick Taylor on guitar 4.15 min. | 4.9669423 avaliação | 38109 exibições I had this song up previously and I was contacted by Chris Mercer, one of the Bluesbreakers who played sax on this track. He offered a couple of photos of himself (I hadn't been able to find much in the way of images of him and indeed this version of the Bluesbreakers). So I have redone the video to include his two photos. The two photos of Chris are at 3.13 and 3.17 (although I cropped both significantly). According to Chris, the first 'is from summer '67 just after I graduated from Oxford and joined the band, taken at Klooks Kleek, which was in West Hampstead right next door to Decca studios, where the albums were recorded. The second one was a year or so later, looks like it was taken in Decca or Abbey Rd studios from the background, my hair was much longer by then'. I have summarised some of Chris' observations as follows: "Working in that band at that time, when it went from cult to international status was very exciting. We were on the road 5 to 6 nights a week and travelled widely in Europe, as well as the groundbreaking tour of the USA. That particular era before the end of the 60s was an incredible time. Much of the business was run at grass roots level by the musicians themselves, before the lawyers, bankers, accountants and managerial chancers turned it into an industry' ". Chris also went on to say that Mayall was a hard task master, changing personnel every few years. After the Bluesbreakers Chris (and his wife) went to the US where he found a new career in .... + Informações |

HIDEAWAY (1966) by John Mayall's Bluesbreakers- featuring Eric Clapton 3.35 min. | 4.975976 avaliação | 139448 exibições One of the first great rock guitar tones was the Blues Breakers 'Beano' album featuring a young Eric Clapton playing a Les Paul Standard through a Marshall amp. Even now, many believe this is Eric's greatest guitar work. At the time, 1966, no one could quite believe the fluid guitar licks and the biting tone. This album was the basis for the slogans around London saying 'Clapton is God'. Here is great info on the equipment Clapton used, including a treble booster. www.gibson.com Hideaway is a Freddy King instrumental that while sticking to the basic structure, has Clapton's own stamp. It was a huge inspiration for guitarists at the time and since, and many learned guitar copying licks off this album. (Just look at the many guitarists who have put their own versions on You Tube!). Sadly there is no film footage of this vintage Clapton, so I have put together a 'Ken Burns' type slide video using every Blues Breaker era image I could find. Comments are invited but please no 'my guitarist is better than your guitarist'!. + Informações |

I STARTED WALKING (1968) by John Mayall's Bluesbreakers featuring Mick Taylor on guitar 2.15 min. | 4.968254 avaliação | 52802 exibições 'I Started Walking' was one part of the Bare Wires Suite by the John Mayall Bluesbreakers, featuring Mick Taylor on guitar. It goes for a bit over two minutes out of that 23 minute suite, and was part of the Bare Wires album released in 1968. Mick had followed Eric Clapton and Peter Green as guitarist for the Bluesbreakers, and left in 1969 to join the Rolling Stones. The reason I love this track is for Mick Taylor's guitar, particularly the tone he obtained from his sunburst Gibson Les Paul Standard going through a Marshall amp on '11'. I also love the way he controls the feedback. Check out Mick's other stuff with Mayall for some great Gibson tones, such as O Pretty Woman, Driving Sideways and Hartley Quits (there are many more!). I have done a slideshow video, incorporating mostly images of Mick from that early period. Comments are welcome, but please no 'my guitarist is better than your guitarist'.. + Informações |

John Mayall's Bluesbreakers - Have You Heard 8.47 min. | 5.0 avaliação | 9477 exibições Behind The Iron Curtain features the two guitar attack of Walter Trout and Coco Montoya. This version of The Bluesbreakers toured for 6 years and IMHO was one of the best incarnations of this band.On his first new album in four years (and first new US release in seven years), John Mayall reclaims the "Bluesbreakers" name for the first time in 18 years to highlight a quintet featuring two lead guitarists, Coco Montoya and Walter Trout, along with a rhythm section of Bobby Haynes (bass), and Joe Yuele (drums). The album was recorded in concert in Hungary in June 1985, and takes a fairly bluesy approach, with lots of space for the guitarists to shine, a format similar to that of The Bluesbreakers lineups of 1965-1968. Sound quality is only fair, and this is not an inspired performance, but Mayall has latched onto a cohesive unit here, and the results are encouraging for the future. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide. + Informações |
