Tommy Dorsey had a huge hit in 1937 with Irving Berlin's composition "Marie", one of the approximately 1500 songs written by that great American composer. Berlin wrote music for broadway shows, for movies, ..... actually he wrote music "for America". A legend already when he was only 30 years old, Berlin wrote songs that indeed would become legendary. "God Bless America", "White Christmas" (all time bestseller worldwide), "Easter Parade" ..... Berlin wasn't only part of American history, he "made" some of the country's history ! "His music has that vitality?both rhythmic and melodic?which never seems to lose any of its exuberant freshness; it has that rich, colorful melodic flow which is ever the wonder of all those of who, too, compose songs; his ideas are endless." These words were spoken by George Gershwin, in an effort to define why Berlin's music was (and is) so popular. So much can be told about Irving Berlin - we really couldn't do him justice by selecting only "some parts" of his wonderful career in this short write-up. (People interested in music history really should dig a bit deeper in this case :) ..... Some 30 years after Tommy Dorsey's success, John Gregory, alias "Chaquito" puts Berlin's "Marie" into a latin dress and the result is just fabulous. A "double" John Gregory posting this time ? Well, actually, the "same guy" is at the "controls" but he's conducting a completely different 'bunch of musicians' and the sound here is also quite different from our previous uploaded title. John Gregory was a multi-talented orchestrator and not only did he record some albums under his own name ("John Gregory & His Orchestra") he also - as loyal fans of this channel meanwhile know - released many successful albums as "Chaquito". Today we encounter yet another Gregory, namely the guy "behind" the "Cascading strings". The term "cascading strings" is a technical term by the way, "invented" by British orchestrator Ronald Binge. Basically it comes down to the string section of the orchestra being divided into several sections, each of them playing different parts of the melody (and thus creating a kind of "cascade" sound). When people in the music business talk about "cascading strings" they usually think of Mantovani but, as said, British orchestrators Binge and Gregory definitely are "worthy competitors" :) Here, Gregory turns Harry Warren's classic "Serenade in Blue" into a smooth and sensual piece that, driven by a subtle rhythm, captures the listener's attention completely and brings him in a world of gentle dreams and a state of total relaxation. We are starting the new year with a "real classic", and this time it really is "a classic", in the 'classical sense' of the word :) "Song Of India" was originally titled "Song for the Indian visitor" and it was one of the aria's in Rimsky-Korsakov's opera "Sadko". Rimsky-Korsakov started working on this opera in 1892 and finished the job in 1896. For more than 40 years, this music was known to a limited opera and classical music loving audience only, until ..... American bandleader Tommy Dorsey turned it into a jazzy tune and renamed it "Song Of India". It became a real "jazz classic" as well and some 30 years later, John Gregory even transformed it into a groovy latin tune. It's this "Chaquito" version that you can enjoy today and when you hear the music you'll sure find it difficult to believe this once was "an opera piece" ! ;-) "Song Of India" has always been one of my personal favourites - I never get bored listening to it and I could 'listen to it a thousand times' - by manner of speaking of course ;-) ....... What John Gregory does with this basically 'simple' tune is just astounding ! Don't be fooled by the rather slow and somewhat reluctant start ..... "Mr Chaquito" soon gets things swingin' and the playful arrangement is a pure demonstration of "master arranging" by Gregory. This isn't just a gem, it's a Gem with a big "G" ! John Gregory, alias Chaquito, brings us this easy and laid-back tune in his typical lush, latin style. Gregory, one of Britain's best arrangers, knew which songs to pick for his Chaquito albums and even wrote some songs himself (like this one). The Chaquito albums nowadays are real collector's items and many of today's easy listening and music fans are charmed by the unique sound of "Chaquito". John Gregory (who also recorded some albums under the pseudonym "Chaquito") with a fantastic arrangement of this Cy Coleman composition. (I could listen to this piece all day :-)) Coleman composed it for the broadway revue "Take Five" in 1957 and soon after Frank Sinatra recorded a vocal version with lyrics written by Carolyn Leigh. In fact, Sinatra recorded the song 3 times, but each time the arrangement was done by another genius of the music business, Nelson Riddle. My personal favourite (vocal) is the duet which Sinatra recorded together with Anita Baker in 1993 (Album "Duets"). But .... my "absolute" favourite remains this great orchestral arrangement by John Gregory....Enjoy the musical witchcraft !. + Informações

Some cha cha flavour now with Chaquito, alias John Gregory. Gregory's arrangements are always "top of the bill" and his music sometimes sounds 'more' latin american then that of some 'local' bands :) It illustrates the craftsmenship of this British orchestrator, composer and arranger. Some critics even say that Mr Gregory 'started' the latin (orchestral) genre in Europe but that's obviously not 'easy to proove'. (But his first latin albums go back to 1959/1960 so he could well be 'one of the pioneers' ;-) In any case, a tune that carries John Gregory's signature always is a "thing of beauty" and hence ........" a joy forever " ;-) From the 1967 album "Latin Sounds for the Small Hours" here's Chaquito, alias John Gregory with "Yolanda Cha Cha".
