This performance was recorded of 1/23/2012 at the Southwest Xpress Cafe in Parma, Ohio. "The Sentinel" came back onto my radar just recently, after someone observed that Don Schlitz's "Oscar the Angel" (which I'd just played) reminded him of a certain John Gorka song. I presumed he was referring to "The Sentinel", as I can recall one of my New England friends (Geoff Bartley, I believe) making the same connection years ago. Interestingly, the two songs were both written in the early '80s, before either writer was hugely successful (as a Hall of Fame country songwriter and a preeminent voice of "New Folk", respectively). I seem to recall that "Oscar" was written in 1980, though I first heard it (via Don's friend Lee Domann) in '83. "The Sentinel" was first released on a Fast Folk compilation in '84.. + Informações

John Gorka (born 1958) is a contemporary American folk musician. In 1991, Rolling Stone magazine called him "the preeminent male singer-songwriter of what has been dubbed the New Folk Movement." "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day" is a Christmas carol based on the 1864 poem "Christmas Bells" by American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow." In 1990, John Gorka recorded his arrangement entitled "Christmas Bells", which uses stanzas 1, 2, 6, and 7 of the poem.
