My September entry for the Disney Song/Movie of the Month group! The theme is retro, so I used one of my favorite songs from the 60's-a parody of The Beatles' "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" called "Judy in Disguise With Glasses" by John Fred and his Playboys. It's basically the characters from Fantasia having a fun little dance party. All the movements are synchronized to match with the song. I was originally going to use more than one Disney movie but the choices of what clips to use were too much so I narrowed it down to Fantasia, one of my favorite Disney films. Don Kendrick is a drummer/percussionist originally from a town called Zachary La. outside of Baton Rouge. He has toured with and recorded with greats such as John Fred and the Playboys ("Judy in Disguise"), Freddy Fender, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry, Cornelius Bros. and Sister Rose, Shelly West, Jeannie C. Riley, Jimmy Hall, Bonnie Bramlett, Copas Bros., Salt Creek, Anson Funderburg, James" Nick" Nixson, Marion James, Billy Cox, Clifford Curry, CJ Vaughn, Delicious Blues Stew- just to name a few. He was voted Nashville's Best Blues Drummer 2011. He has also received gold, platinum, and grammy awards for his participation in the recording of many projects and is featured in the Nov. 2011 issue of Classic Drummer Magazine. Biography by Bruce Eder: Very little is known for certain about this group -- which may actually have been two groups, or possibly two incarnations of the same group. What is certain is that a Baton Rouge-spawned outfit called Cold Grits had several brushes with greatness across a history of about three (or perhaps four) years. The Cold Grits go back at least to 1968 as a backing back for John Fred (of "Judy in Disguise" fame), on-stage and on his sides for the Uni Records label. Their lineup, according to a posting on a blog owned by Lafayette, LA-based researcher Dan Phillips, was Hog Cowart on bass, Jimmy O'Rourke on guitar, Billy Carter on keyboards, and Tubby Ziegler on drums. They ended up folded into the Uni Records-signed soul outfit the Sister and Brothers, fronted by singer Geraldine "Sister Gerry" Richard, who issued three singles (produced and co-written by Ron Shaab) that gave co-production credit to "Cold Gritz" (sic). That same year, Atco Records released an instrumental cover of the Isley Brothers' "It's Your Thing" backed with "Bring It on Home to Me," credited to Cold Grits. At some point, in 1969, this band parted company with John Fred and ended up in Birmingham, AL, where the bandmembers logged a huge amount of studio time in addition to playing a massive number of gigs, the former at least initially in association with recording entrepreneur Bob Grove (Prestige Recording Studio, etc.) at his Unity Records. Thirty-five years and thousands of songs later, Fred Eaglesmith is a singer and guitarist with a substantial group of extremely loyal fans, a celebrity in the small alternative country music scene.
