John Baez - Ecological Damage from Global Warming 5.45 min. | 3.3428571 avaliação | 21527 exibições Complete video at: fora.tv Celebrated mathematical physicist John Baez looks at global warming from an historical perspective, and details the widespread ecological damage that may result from rapid climate change. ----- John Baez - "Zooming Out in Time" The graphs we see these days, John Baez began, all look vertical--- carbon burning shooting up, CO2 in the air shooting up, global temperature shooting up, and population still shooting up. How can we understand what really going on? "It's like trying to understand geology while you're hanging by your fingernails on a cliff, scared to death. You think all geology is vertical." So, zoom out for some perspective. An Earth temperature graph for the last 18000 years shows that we've built a false sense of security from 10000 years of unusually stable climate. Even so, a "little dent" in the graph of a drop of only 1 degree Celsius put Europe in a what's called "the little ice age" from 1555 to 1850. It ended just when industrial activity took off, which raises the question whether it was us that ended it. Zoom out further still to the last 65 million years. The temperature graph show several major features. One is the rapid (every 100000 years) wide swings of major ice ages. When they began, 1.35 million years ago, is when humans mastered fire. But almost all of the period was much warmer than now, with ferns growing in Antarctica. "Now it's cold. What's wrong with a little warming?" Baez asked. The problem is that the .... + Informações |

John Baez on the number 5 63.95 min. | 5.0 avaliação | 9 exibições This ain't Sesame Street. The Rankin Lectures 2008, My Favorite Numbers, were given by John Baez of the University of California at Riverside. Baez is well-known for, among other things, his long-running web column This Week's Finds in Mathematical Physics and the research blog The n-Category Café. Different numbers have different personalities. The number 5 is quirky and intriguing, thanks in large part to its relation with the golden ratio, the "most irrational" of irrational numbers. The plane cannot be tiled with regular pentagons, but there exist quasiperiodic planar patterns with pentagonal symmetry of a statistical nature, first discovered by Islamic artists in the 1600s, later rediscovered by the mathematician Roger Penrose in the 1970s, and found in nature in 1984. The Greek fascination with the golden ratio is probably tied to the dodecahedron. Much later, the symmetry group of the dodecahedron was found to give rise to a 4-dimensional regular polytope, the 120-cell, which in turn gives rise to the Poincaré homology sphere and the root system of the exceptional Lie group E8. So, a wealth of exceptional objects arise from the quirky nature of 5-fold symmetry. Text taken from www.maths.gla.ac.uk. + Informações |

Towards a Spin Foam Model of Quantum Gravity 9.72 min. | 4.2777777 avaliação | 5518 exibições NOTE: pdf link for transparencies- math.ucr.edu Probably not everyones cup of tea. A clip from a lecture by John Baez in conjunction with the LOOPS 'O5 series by the Max Planck Institute of Gravitation (Albert Einstein Institute) regarding a proposal for quantum gravity (the clip appears to start at page 14 of the transparencies). Date- 11th Oct 05. Source- math.ucr.edu LOOPS '05- loops05.aei.mpg.de 'Spin foam models include several different classes of physical theories: lattice gauge theories, dynamical triangulation models of quantum gravity, "chain mail" quantum field theories, and topological string theories. Is there a spin foam model of quantum gravity in 4 dimensions? To address this question, we review recent work on causal dynamical triangulations and the renormalization group. This suggests that quantum gravity is a well-defined theory with the curious property that spacetime is effectively 4-dimensional at large distance scales, but 2-dimensional at very short distance scales. This is just what one might expect from a spin foam model, since spacetime is fundamentally 2-dimensional in these theories. We discuss properties a spin foam model should have in order to approximate general relativity at large distance scales.'.
