Mr. Five by Five, Jimmy Rushing, Sings I Want A LIttle Girl 3.67 min. | 5.0 avaliação | 10004 exibições James Andrew Rushing (August 26, 1901 -- June 8, 1972), known as Jimmy Rushing, was an American blues shouter and swing jazz singer from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, best known as the featured vocalist of Count Basie's Orchestra from 1935 to 1948. Rushing was known as "Mr. Five by Five" and was the subject of an eponymous 1942 popular song that was a hit for Harry James and others. He joined Walter Page's Blue Devils in 1927, then joined Bennie Moten's band in 1929. He stayed with the successor Count Basie band when Moten died in 1935. Rushing was born into a family with musical talent and accomplishments. His father, Nherhu Keith Rochester, was a trumpeter and his mother, Meshach Benjamin Chase and Wayne Anthony Chase were singers. Rushing toured the Mid-West and California as an itinerant blues singer in 1923 and 1924 before moving to Los Angeles, California, where he sang with Jelly Roll Morton. Rushing sang with Billy King before moving on to Page's Blue Devils in 1927. He, along with other members of the Blue Devils, defected to the Bennie Moten band in 1929. Moten died in 1935, and Rushing joined Count Basie for what would be a 13-year vocation. Due to his tutelage under his mentor Moten, Rushing was a proponent of the Kansas City jump blues tradition, best evinced by his performances of "Sent For You Yesterday" and "Boogie Woogie" for the Count Basie Orchestra. After leaving Basie, his recording career soared, as a solo artist and a singer with other bands. When the .... + Informações |

Count Basie [1of2] Jimmy Rushing -- The Sound Of Jazz TV 1957 7.12 min. | 5.0 avaliação | 5006 exibições 'I Left My Baby', sung by Jimmy Rushing, with Count Basie & His Orchestra, from 'The Sound Of Jazz', a program in the 'Seven Lively Arts' series on CBS-TV. The program was televised live from CBS-TV Studio 58 in Manhattan, Sunday, 8 December 1957, 5:00 to 6:00 PM Eastern Standard Time. The program, and series, host was New York Herald-Tribune columnist John Crosby. This is an 'amateur' off-the-air audio recording of the telecast; the tape is part of my personal collection. It is not from a commercial source, and the content is not for commercial use. Technical details are given in the Description accompanying my Count Basie [2of 2] upload. The photograph shows Basie, seated left, and Rushing, standing center, with Bennie Moten, seated right, in 1931. 'The Kid from Red Bank' and 'Mr. 5-by-5' achieved their first real recognition as members of Bennie Moten's Kansas City Orchestra, the band that Basie led to worldwide fame after Moten died. But Moten's initial Victor recording, 1926, both sides of which I uploaded, amply demonstrates how good the band was with Moten playing piano and directing.. + Informações |

Jimmy Rushing (arr. Count Basie): two Blues numbers 3.53 min. | 4.8333335 avaliação | 1211 exibições Good Morning Blues; Jimmy's Blues ----------------------------------------- These two pieces are played 'straight' from the book 'The Basie Style: piano transcriptions by Count Basie', published by Gregman Vocco and Conn. Given that there are over 40 short pieces in the collection, all of around 2 minutes, I would guess that they were put together by a 'ghost transcriber' from Basie recordings and not by the great bandleader himself. The arrangements have some salon touches, and some of the most up-tempo numbers are technically demanding in their LH stretches and leaps. The Oklahoma-born blues and jazz singer Jimmy Rushing (1903-72) was the featured vocalist of the Count Basie Orchestra from 1935 to 1948. --------------------------------------- Played by Phillip Sear www.psear.co.uk. + Informações |
