My next was a Gibson for my 15th birthday and I started to write some songs. When I was 17 I walked into the Sand Mountain In Houston and auditioned. A singer/songwriter by the name of Townes Van Zandt listened along with a few others who happened to be there, and they decided to let me play that weekend. I was 17, Townes was 23 or so and musically way beyond his years. Townes took me under his wing for a while, taught me some different pickin styles, gave me some harmonicas, and along with others who came through Sand Mountain that year such as Lightnin Hopkins, Jerry Jeff Walker, Don Sanders, Guy Clark, etc. are my musical influences found.
